Why didn't the movie work?

I gotta say that Catherine's part was terrible. Is it the directing or the casting that went wrong for me? I don't know. But, her playing the weak, unknowing, sometimes coy character just did not work for me. I though women's roles in 1999 were stronger then that. Her character's arc never seems to change. Well, IMO only.
