Why gabriel why....???

I really want to gabriel hook up with billy, they looked so cute together!!

reply

The movie took the realistic turn that "pretty" Gabriel went with the other hunk & chose style over substance. This represents the superficial shallowness of SOME gay men. Billy was better off without him.

reply

but the thing is thats its all a movie
its not based on a real story and most gay men are not like that.
but yes billy was better off without him

reply

yes it is based on a true story tommy o'harver said so himself i quote "yes billy's is some what biographical to my life" end of a no not ALL gay men are like gabriel and tommy was also toying with the idea of having perry and billy sleeping together

reply

i realize it's supposed to be real, and that it's all just a movie and people want a happy ending... but.....
oh man, i don't even know what i want to say other than:
the moment of realization, when billy looked at gabriel and had to think "oh, it's not that he's confused and likes me... it's that he's gay alright, and just isn't interested."....
i was seriously heart broken for a while there!
mostly because i tend to be in situations like billy's - and... well, frankly i'm in one right now... and, i honestly cannot think of anything that would hurt me more than to see this guy made up his mind, and is going out with guys... but just not me

so... yeah, kinda lost the point --- "why gabriel why"... because if they had had that perfect kiss, soon followed by heartwarming music and rolling credits, the movie would be soon forgotten. i love a good romance comedy... but i can't even pretend to remember any of them as well as i will remember Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss.

Gabriel lies to Billy about himself and Billy gets to deal with that in a very public way at the end of the movie. He should have kicked the s*** out of Gabriel. Yeesh

I can only bear with watching this movie rarely; i.e., not often. Since I saw it when it came out, I bought it on tape, watched it twice on tape, and then bought it on DVD, and have watched it once. The reason why I watch it more than once? Because I like the film. The reason I haven't had to purchase second and third copies? Gabriel.

Gabriel's character made watching this movie a chore. Oh, I mean, when I first saw the film, I loved the film, I was really getting into it, but that scene on the beach on Catalina when Billy is talking to Gabriel and the other male model calls out to Gabe, it all became clear, and I only just caught myself from shrieking with rage in the theater. Blooeyz2001, I couldn't have said it better myself. Gabriel, a seemingly identifiable, likable character, turned out to be a reprehensible vagabond of shallow detritus and vacuous expression. In retrospect, everything makes sense. It all fits too perfectly. Watch the film a few times, and you'll see what I mean. A lot of things foreshadow this unveiling of the male mockery that Brad Rowe portrays.
I don't often get personally angry with the intangible. I mean, I know it's a film, but I really wanted to grind Gabriel's face into hamburger. Knock his pretty , pearly whites into next week.

That little twist in the plot infuriated me. I'm sorry to say it. A lot of movies have twists I don't like, but it (BHSK) is one of the films I watch because I love it so much and have a hard time watching because I know what is coming. Yes, Billy is better off without the shallow, vague Gabriel, but would it have killed Gabriel to give in to at least a kiss? ARGH.

Nevertheless, I'll continue to watch this film every other year or so and still throw something soft( a pillow, or a slipper) at the TV screen while shouting "You idiot" at Sean Hayes, and "You bastard" at Brad Rowe.

anyone who thinks what gabriel did to billy is rare is kidding himself. it happens all the freaking time. which is what makes the ending so heartbreaking. i think a lot of us saw it coming but were in denial.

i found this movie amazing until that little revelation. and i dont hold it against the movie. its just too painful to watch.

"Why Gabriel why"? Because Gabriel was an *beep* thats why.

I agree with the poster that said the ending makes you re-evaluate the whole movie. Gabriel was a vain jerk who strung Billy along for his own amusement. From the whole "girlfriend in San Francisco" bit to the lying in bed shirtless then pretending to be shocked/offended when Billy tried something.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

reply

> Gabriel was a vain jerk who strung Billy along for his own amusement.

Gabriel was a confused young man throughout most of the movie. He really did have a girlfriend and he thought that he was supposed to be straight. But, he just didn't feel right being straight.

The time that he spent hanging out with Billy was genuine. He liked Billy, but just as a friend. He allowed things to go as far as they did that night in bed because he was trying to work out whether he was gay or not. He figured that it would be safer to find this out with another gay man rather than a straight man.

Reflecting on that night over the next few days, Gabriel probably did decide that he was gay. But, he also discovered that he just didn't have a sexual attraction to Billy. That happens all the time.

He is a model, so he is going to be a little bit of a jerk. He didn't handle the final scene with Billy very well, but then, who among us can say that we've always handled these kind of situations properly?

That's an interesting interpretation, bing-57. Being a straight woman, I never would have considered that point of view. To my eyes, Gabriel seemed too comfortable with his new boyfriend at the end to have not been consciously gay all along.

Obviously I'm not an expert on the subject, but it seems like a young man in his mid to late 20s would not be so nonchalant about his first, fullfledged gay affair unless he'd been dipping his toe in that pool for some time, so to speak. That's the main reason I think Gabriel was toying with Billy.

It could just be an acting issue. Maybe a more skilled actor would have come across as more tortured about his decisions. Instead Brad Rowe came across as blase about everything. Which made his treatment of Billy even more cruel.

> To my eyes, Gabriel seemed too comfortable with his new boyfriend at the end to have not been consciously gay all along.

That did seem a little bit fast, but I wrote that off as a bit of laziness on the part of the script writers. That was a quick and easy way to show that Gabriel wasn't interested in Billy in "that way."

> That's the main reason I think Gabriel was toying with Billy.

Yet, there were other clues that Gabriel wasn't stringing Billy along. When he first stayed over, he made a big deal about sleeping on the couch. Had he meant to string Billy along, he would have hopped into bed right away. Also, he probably would have kissed Billy and allowed the heavy petting to go pretty far before backing off.

Instead, we saw a guy wracked with indecision. He decided to sleep on the couch and then changed his mind. He then allowed Billy to touch him and then changed his mind. He agreed that he wasn't going to Catalina and then changed his mind. He claimed to be straight and then changed his mind.

This boy is going through a big change in his life and he is constantly second guessing himself.

Also note that, in the changing-room scene, he was not comfortable displaying his "package" in a tight swimsuit. Had he been "dipping his toes in the water" all along, I'd think he'd be a lot more comfortable showing off like that.

Plus, he did call Billy and leave him a message on his machine saying that he was going to Catalina. A completely self-absorbed jerk who didn't have any feelings for Billy wouldn't have done that.

I think Gabriel was just shallow. That's why he took to modeling so quickly. He did care for Billy at the time, but when something better came along, Gabriel moved on without a second thought.

Also, consider that the model that Gabriel was with had a female model with him. What if the two models were a couple and invited Gabriel in for a threesome the night before Billy arrived?

Gabriel could easily have overcome his inhabitions towards men in a situation where he had both a female and a male partner. The next day, he would be extra chummy with both the man and the woman.

I agree with most of the people posting. Reality sucks, but it makes for a more interesting movie.

One thing I really liked about the movie was the realistic ending. If it had ended in a romantic kiss (as someone already said), I would have turned it off and forgotten about it immediately. I almost took my dog out for walk and missed the last 10 minutes because I thought it was going to end in a typical Hollywood romantic way.

And remember---Perry tells Billy in one scene when he goes through the possibilities with Gabe: "One is that he is gay and just not interested".

Which ended up being the way it was.

I also liked the similarities in the scene where Perry tells Billy that he (Perry) had an unrequited crush on Billy and got over it because he valued the friendship. It was almost EXACTLY like a scene in "Parting Glances" between Steve Buscemi's character and the actor who played Perry---

ok, yeah, reality may suck, but i'm getting really tired of gay romcoms falling into one of two camps:
horrible bad movies that should never be watched.
or
good movies that are aware that they're semi well made and feel the need to have "realistic endings" where guy b, who you never thought would love hopelessly endearing guy a, actually doesn't.
see, the thing is, i never really go into a romantic comedy, of any orientation, looking for a thought provoking, realistic film. i go into a romantic comedy because i feel bad and want to be comforted. which means, no, i don't want the main character to end up with some random guy at the end that i know nothing about. i want him to end up with the guy he's been in love with the entire time! what if billy crystal hadn't told meg ryan that he loved her at the end of when harry met sally? and then they'd gotten together with other people, because they just weren't right for eachother? it would suck! the straight romantic comedies understand that their formula exists for a reason, and i love them for it. the problem? i'm not straight, and when i fall hopelessly in love with straight boy x for the umpteenth time, and end up dejected and feeling like *beep* i don't want to see straight people falling in love, i want to see a boy falling in love with the boy who loves him, so that maybe, for a few seconds, i can feel like my love life isn't completely hopeless and i won't actually die alone. is that too much to ask?

this movie infuriates me.

I have to say I agree most with Bing-57's interpretation of the film. It did seem that Gabriel was slightly interested and I wouldn't say he was "toying" with Billy so much as he was confused. However, whether he meant to or not.... he used Billy and it really sucked. Sure, this may happen all the time... or sometimes... whatever.... but it's not like something that's the "norm" and would it freaking kill someone to make a gay movie that isn't so goddamn superficial? No wonder straight people think we're all sex-crazed and shallow. They see movies like this and they see exactly what it portrays... the sad lonely gay guy who never finds love (stereotype #1 and the biggest worry my parents have about my being gay) and the "curious" guy who leads Billy on (again, whether he meant to or not) and then ends up gay and with someone else who is superficial. I had always wanted to see this movie, and I finally sat down and watched it and was completely disappointed. I immediately thought to myself... "I'm gonna post something about the ending on IMDB" and it came to my surprise that several people beat me to it and felt the same way I did. For this sort of situation to happen all the time... it's nice to know that there are plenty of us out there that aren't shallow and were disappointed in the superficiality of this film. I too have had similar experiences... most that have never ended with the guy being gay, so much as curious or just experimenting and deciding that it wasn't for them. However, this movie made me paranoid because I have been in "love" with one of my best friends since high school, and we've had a similar thing to what billy and gabriel had, on and off for the past 5 years. It's frustrating but he keep on dating girls and seems to have feelings for them, however he definitely cares for me in a different way that his other guy friends and all his girlfriends have told me that. My greatest fear is that one day he will realize he is, indeed gay or bi, and will date other men besides me, just as gabriel does in the film.... I would be absolutely heartbroken. I'd rather him be straight than do anything like that to me. Another thing I hated about this movie was the fact that after Billy befriended Gabriel and used him to get his start in modeling, to meet people, and to figure out that he's gay... they don't even stay friends. He could have been nicer about it, he obviously cared for Billy... why did he have to leave him the way he did. Sure, Billy would have been sad or heartbroken but he would have gotten over it and settled for friendship. This movie was very disappointing.

Wow! Your seething anger definitely jumped off of the laptop screen.

It was torture to hope for a good ending but deep down, you have this feeling that things just wouldn't work out between Billy and Gabriel. Reality sucks!!! I do love My Best Friend's Wedding even if it's not so formulaic.

Gabriel did not string Billy along. He liked Billy, but just did not fall in love with him. That's not a crime. He did not set out to be cruel. He was genuinely puzzled about himself. He was in crisis.

Then in a glamourous weekend he meets a god, and all things become clear. (No surprise there. Falling in love often opens our eyes.) He simply had no chance to tell Billy anything, before Billy finds out the hard way——Billy ought not have stalked Gabriel. What happened to him was his own fault.

As for superficiality, Billy finds consolation fast enough!

gabe did play games with billy and billies position is one *beep* position to be in but what the moral of the story is if someone is confused and your not get as far away as you can from them billy almost did it if it wasnt for gabes persistance of always wanting to be around himt hen cut him off like that is like wtf.. He was messing with his head from when he mentioned that he likes him because he sees him for who he really is bull thats where u tell he was messing with him.

Take the advice from the movie if your falling for someone confused cut it off right there and then because their gonna try to use u to find out what they really are and once they find out the truth which most times is the obvious (their gay)their gonna leave u for someone in their caliber so *beep* them over and cut them off keep it business .

u could tell billy was trying to avoid it from the beginning he didnt want to but gabe kept sending him signals.

I agree with the guy who said most of us are Billys looking for a Gabe, but we find out the hard way that the Gabes only want other Gabes!

I also think it is the ending that makes this movie so special, so memorable. I've seen it several times and to me it is real, poignant, heart-felt, moving.

I never thought of Gabriel as being this jerk stringing Billy along; I always saw him as a gay man struggling - and coming to terms - with his sexual identity but considering Billy to be nothing more than a really good friend./. That hurts I know, but that's life and that's what makes this movie so good.

reply

The ending wasn't handled the best, it seemed too forced that all of a sudden Gabe just takes off with the other guy. There wasn't enough of a lead up to that, and they had to make Gabe out to be a flake to Billy only in the last couple of scenes. If he was nicer to Billy in the end but did the same thing, a lot of people probably would have wanted something more dramatic.

I watched the film again a few days ago after not viewing it in several years, and boy, what a great movie! I had forgotten how good this is. The acting, the dialogue, the pacing, the cinematography... every aspect is very well crafted.

Alas, in regard to Gabriel: Yes, he was definitely a jerk and used Billy, and as a few others have mentioned, Billy was better off without him. Of course he wasn't as much of a jerk as say, Stanley from A Streetcar Named Desire, or Darth Vader- *laughing, but a jerk nonetheless. That's what makes Gabriel a great character. He isn't an antagonist who sits there twiddling an evil, pointy mustache. There is a lot of "gray area" with him.

A few posts in this thread delve into Gabriel's point of view and seem to be a bit lenient on him, by suggesting that the time he spent with Billy was genuine for example. While that viewpoint is interesting, I'd have to respectfully disagree with the notion of Gabriel being agenda-less and forthright. In hindsight, Gabriel doesn't come across as being genuine to Billy at all, in any way, shape, or form. This was made especially more apparent by not having watched the movie in a long while and seeing it again with fresh eyes.

Gabriel definitely had an agenda. Sure, Gabriel is nice enough to Billy when the two first meet, but why wouldn't he be? In their first scene together, Gabriel is the coffee boy at a small cafe. Gabriel surely is aware of his own good looks and I imagine that he was hoping to meet a coffee house patron (be that a director, a photographer, movie star, etc) with connections that could move him on to bigger and better things. The person just so happened to be Billy, and that bigger and better thing was a modeling career.

At the initial art show, Gabriel doesn't exactly hesitate to jump at the modeling offer from Rex Webster. Nor does Gabe hesitate to postpone the photography shoot with Billy right away at the behest of Rex Webster's offer. Right from the get-go, Billy gets shoved to the side. And it's not like Gabe is going to say "No" to going to the movie with Billy or hanging out at Billy's place in the interim... after-all, Billy makes it possible for Gabe to meet people like Rex Webster. It's in Gabe's best interest to be nice to Billy at this juncture.

And when Gabe flirts with Billy (the light touching, the shirtless sleepover, the teasing in bed, and so forth)- it's not that Gabe is particularly attracted to Billy... Billy just happened to be there. Billy could've been any photographer guy. Gabe didn't seem "curious or questioning." He seemed closeted and probably had gay encounters prior to Billy. Unfortunately Billy was the vessel through which Gabe officially "came out." Thankfully Gabriel did do one jerk-less thing by putting a stop to the near disastrous sex romp with Billy. Even with that being said though, given Gabe's superficial/shallow personality, vain nature, and flippant treatment of Billy, I think that in the heat of the moment, Gabe probably realized, "No, I'd rather be sleeping with that other hot model guy." So, it's not like Gabe rejected sleeping with Billy out of consideration for Billy's feelings.

Then, when Gabe makes the late decision to leave Billy a phone message about going to Catalina, you can tell by the tone of Gabriel's voice that he doesn't even want to be calling Billy... he likely stalled all day and held off on calling, because he knew Billy would try to come (Gabe probably didn't want Billy there, fawning over him, especially after the awkward night). Out on Catalina at the Rex Webster after party, when Billy walks up to talk to Gabriel, it's easy to miss, but the ditzy make-up girl that Gabe is taking to- she gives Billy a look of pity as he walks up. Prior to Billy walking up, the conversation likely went something along the lines of Gabe saying, "Yeah... that Billy guy, I hope he doesn't show up. He has a crush on me. He's kind of annoying. Oh, crap, there he is. I was afraid of this. Okay, okay everybody, stay cool." When Billy asks Gabe if they can talk, Gabe just keeps standing there, not wanting to give Billy the time of day and knowing all the while what Billy wants to talk about.

During their last scene on the beach, while Gabriel isn't nearly as harsh as he could've been, he still blows Billy off in a flippant way. I mean, geez, would it have hurt Gabriel so much to be a bit more gracious in regard to the rejection? Essentially Gabriel said, "You dote on me... I'm not confused... I'm pretty sure what it is I'm supposed to want," then walks off into the sunset with the hot model guy that Billy could never compete with. Ouch. Ca-ca-ca-cold hearted... snake! Lol. Sheesh. Anyway, yeah... so Gabriel... not so genuine.

At the very end of the film, I'm very glad that Billy meets a potential love interest and that things are left open. It still leaves us with a happy ending. The guy that walks up to Billy at the Hollywood Screen Kiss art show seems to be GENUINELY interested in Billy and his work/ likes Billy for who he is.

Phew, wow! I didn't intend for that to become such a long character breakdown of Gabriel, scene per scene. Lol. I apologize for the length of this post. :)

I typically find Sean Hayes annoying but not in this. But almost everyone else was. Gabriel was the most annoying, but Billy's hag, who came across as the love child of Barbra Streisand and Sally Kellerman, was a very close second.
