to early for a New Year party???

I know in the US they party earlier than us(Chile,South America)but..come on: at 8:30 expecting people to start showing up at her place??? and all the bars and places full with people at 9-10 o'clock on new Year's Eve??? in my country New Year Parties start AFTER midnight!!! people arrive at 1- 2 o'clock and stay untill sunrise (well, here it's Summer...that helps) at 9-10 o'clock bars would be empty...the bartender that works that night NO WAY would be FINISHING his job at 11..at that time he would be arriving to work!!!!!

omg that's weird.. so you're not with friends and family when the clock strikes 12?? I'm in Australia and if I were having a NYE party I'd put the time as about 7 - 7.30pm.. and then the party would finish at whatever time, most likely dawn.. I've never heard of parties starting after midnight on NYE..

I think parties and bars work a bit differently. I suppose Martha's big deal was the fact she has invited TONS AND TONS of people to her party..and not even ONE had showed up yet. Some parties do start at midnight or around 11. I think the main reason for that is some people don't wanna be passed out BEFORE the New Year arrives, lol.

The first time I went out on NYE was 1981 (I too was underage!) and we left my house sometime between 8:30 and 9:00. By 10 the bar was already crowded so I think most people leave early (especially if they're going bar hopping).

Every 10 years (when a year ends in a 9)I usually have a NYE cocktail party (and it usually starts around 5 and lasts until 9). This way if people show up they can relax a little and then go out.

Oh and I feel for poor Monica. My first guests didn't arrive until 7:30 and for '99 only two people showed up due to Y2K fears.

That damn Y2K...I was only 10 at the time so I didnt really know about it...but of course nothing happened...blecccch. Now a days I go to New Years Parties..but I usually go to a bar first have a few drinks with friends, then go to he party..showing up fashionably late is the best way to go..and you will be a lil tipsy so EVERYONE is your friend. However the 08' new years I just stayed at a bar all night an the bartendar was giving everyone free champagne and like popped the corks at midnight and I didnt have a new years kiss so I just grabbed some random..haha. I looove New Years.

If the NYE party starts after midnight, where does everyone do their countdown? You know, the actual reason for the celebration in the first place?

I too am in OZ, and my friends and I BBQ every year, and we start usually around lunch time and go through until the sun comes up, (if you can handle it! Mostly we go til we drop!). I don't like to go out clubbing or bar hopping, too crowded, and triple the price on NYE! Even if you have a good time, it's spoilt at the end of the night when you are fighting to get a taxi home! Would much rather be within walking distance of my bed when the time comes to crash!
