Why is it called 200 cigarettes???

Just curious why is the movie named 200 cigarettes??

reply

I dunno, but I have two theories:

1. Maybe that's the number of cigarettes smoked in the movie... Although I have for sure not counted and probably won't.

2. The other thing is that there are 200 cigarettes (10 packs of 20) in a carton, and Lucy gives Kevin a carton of cigarettes at the beginning. I don't know why this would be an important enough detail to make it the name of the movie, though.

I personally think you're probably right with your second theory, although I've also considered the first. As for whether or not it's an important enough detail to warrant becoming the title - it may well be that the carton of cigs played a bigger part in the original script.

Titles being an odd thing in movies - the example that springs to mind is 'Trainspotting'. Different in that obviously it's the title of the book also, but for viewers who'd not read the book, the fact that the film-makers decided to cut the scene which explaine the title is probably a source of mystery.

okay just to prove that i am a true loser, i have counted the cigarettes they smoke in the movie, they being the people with legitimate speaking roles and they smoke far more than 200, it was in the 300's when i counted about two years back. why did i do that you might ask, it would be because i truly love this movie! it has the greatest cast and possibly the best soundtrack i've ever scene though some of the music was of the mid-80's not of pre-1981, and also the whole the movie was shot in 1998 and it took place in 1981, and you can see the cars in the background that are 1996 crown victoria's but it takes a true movie buff to see that kind of thing though...

reply

the second theory is correct. and im pretty sure they call it that because at the end paul rudd's character talks about how people smoke to hide their inner feelings, and during the whole movie the characters are going through some time of change and sorta hide their emmotions. plus lucy gave paul rudd a pack of 200 cigs at the beginning.

Hey, it was the eighties, it was still cool to smoke. So, you know they smoked 200 cigarettes in the movie.

"life's bitch, now so am I"

reply

Yeah. I didn't really get why Trainspotting had that title. I knew it was a book, but I didn't read it, so I was confused. You only see one train in it.

As for 200 Cigarettes, I think it had to do with the box of cigarettes Lucy gives to Kevin. I'm not sure, but it might be. Or.. what queenmab71 said, maybe all together the cast smoked 200 cigarettes.
By the way, queenmab71, I'm guessing your name is from Merlin? That was a good movie, Queen Mab was the best character! I love Miranda Richardson. Then again, your name might be from something completely different. Oh well.

Trainspotting is a hobby over here in the UK. Its showing the similarity of wasting time; wasting your life counting trains, and wasting your life by injecting herion. I have seen the movie and read the book several times, i advise you to read it.

reply

I thought it was called trainspotting because the room he keeps staying in to detox has images of trains all over the wall.

"By the way, queenmab71, I'm guessing your name is from Merlin? That was a good movie, Queen Mab was the best character!"

um.... queen mab is from shakespeare. actually, maybe older than that, because in 'romeo & juliet', the reference to queen mab (queen of the faries) is in the form of a quote about her, as if in reference to something that others would already know. in any case, the shakespeare reference is a bit older then the one from 'merlin'.

:p

queen mab is also referrenced in "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke", a song on Queen's second album, "Queen II". The song is written about a painting by Richard Dadd that was painted over a 9 year peiod 1855-1864. Dadd also wrote a poem about the painting and named all the characters afer shakesperean characters.

I'm not entirely sure, but I did hear once that 200 is the number of cigarettes you see throughout the course of the film, including the ones in ashtrays, and floating in sinks!! I like the theory about the carton though....

It might also be because at the end Kevin points out that everyone hid behind their cigarettes at the party, so it's like a moral or something.

"A friend of mine once went through and counted each cigarette....."

Erm, yeah, they told you that, did they?

That is all.

I think the term 200 cigarets is used a time frame. You know, the events that happend to the people in this film over the collective smoking of 200 cigarettes. I haven't even seen this film, I don't know why I'm here, I just always speculated that's why this movie has this title.

reply

If you pay attention they say why in the very end.

reply

Ok trainspotting is not a hobby in the uk it is a hobby in england!! not in scotland . and the person was right when they said it just showed how people who are on heroin value their life so little that they find trianspotting a non-pointless exercise

reply

Its definately referring to the cigarettes- what's all this going through and counting crap- multiplication people!! 20 cigs in a pack, 10 packs in a carton....i guess its good you guys aren't smokers... :)

reply

I just kept reading and i was shocked no one picked up on it sooner. THANKS SO MUCH!! i was getting frustrated.

reply

I know you wrote this a while ago, but it doesn't look like your question was clearly answered. 200 Cigarettes is relating to the number of cigarettes in a carton of cigarettes. there are 20 cigs to a pack and 10 packs to a carton. Lucy buys kevin a carton of cigarettes at the very beginning of the movie and i believe it is relevant to that.

reply

Like someone said, Kevin's dialogue at the end of the movie says it all.

People will go to great lengths to remain on the surface of life. They'll deny very real feelings for each other out of fear, like Lucy and Kevin did, while doing demeaning things like running around like rats on New Year's Eve to get to a party (or throw a party!) and/or get laid, merely to confirm to their egos that their lives aren't completely lacking.

In the end, you see everyone had a blast, you got some warm fuzzies from the poloroids, but none of these people are going to see each other again.

reply

because New Year's Eve would've been a terrible title(as proved later on, though even the name couldn't have changed that piece of crap, but that's a whole different board), but really...

with the way films are shot and edited, I'm sure it's not because we see 200 cigs smoked(I'm not gonna count). I just highly doubt that there are exactly 200 we see.

Yeah Lucy gives Kevin a carton(200cigs), and then he gives his shield speech.

If you count the characters you come up with this:

There are 15 characters in the movie(not counting Dave, who never speaks and serves absolutely no function in the story). Of those 15, 5 don't smoke(Cindy, Jack, Tom, Monica, and The Cabbie(who only smokes weed).

Leaving 10 smokers(again not counting Dave) (Kevin, Lucy, Val, Stephi, Eric, Hilary, Caitlyn, Bridget, Ellie, and the Bartender). These 10 people each have (at least) a pack on them, and probably(even though we don't see the entire night) went through an entire pack as they used them for shields against interaction. So 10 people with/going through 20 cigs equals 200 cigs.

Also I doubt Dave is the type of guy who has a pack of cigs on him.

There's a song in there somewhere, and its title is listed at the end, "I smoked 200 cigarettes". Ergo the movie title.

reply

in the end of the movie they say that people prefer the company of cigarettes than other people, so i thought it might be reference to the number of people who attended the party, which is reference to humanity in general.
