i don't understand

i don't understand how at age 24 an ordinary Yugoslavian yuong man could make a film in USA?
wasn't that a communist totalitarian state from which you can't go out in a western country unless you are not a big party boss or at least a son of a big party boss?

You obviously don't know much about Yugoslavia. It was the least totalitarian country among communist states. Would you believe if I told you that Yugoslav New Wave/Punk scene was among strongest in Europe? Yugoslavia had something that was used to call "communism with a human face", system that wasn't always a true democracy, but was far, far away from being a simple totalitarian regime.
