I was so inspired and intrigued by this film that on a whim booked a flight 2 days later to Morocco. I landed in Casablanca and then headed to Marrakech. I loved it!! I stayed in Hotel Ali right in the Djema Fna and went to sleep to the sound of snakecharmer's flutes and was awoken by the call to prayer from 2 or 3 different mosques. I hope to return there soon. I have a website with my pics on it if you are interested. I went to Fez too (hated the medina, should have stayed in Marrakech). I stayed in the Hostel in Casablanca near the medina (don't stay there if you have to leave early because they lock you in and you cannot get out until they feel like it). my website is www.nomadicphoto.com
I remember watching this movie late at night a few years ago and wanting to fly to Morocco the next day. I rented it recently and still adore this movie. Kate was brilliant, as were the children. "Bilal" was nice eye candy, imo.
I visited your site. Wonderful photos and journal. Did you go alone?? I'd like to visit within the next couple of years (once I save up) but hesitate because of possible hostility toward Americans. I won't let it deter me though. :)
I love this movie too. So beautiful to watch, you feel like you are there with the characters.
I have been to Marrakesh, too and it was a wonderful trip.
cillastar - don't worry about hostility toward Americans. In general, the Moroccan people are very hospitable, friendly, and generous. They go out of their way for guests to feel comfortable & welcome. I said I liked someone's shirt once and they wanted to take it off and give it to me.
oh yeah, I forgot to add... if you go to Morocco, bring a Costco size bottle of IMMODIUM AD! Need I say more. He he. Best advice I got about traveling to Morocco.
Also, bring a roll of toilet paper with you everywhere. Most modern Riads and hotels have flush toilets, but you might run into some places that have a Turkish toilet or "squat toilet" that don't have toilet paper.
Stay in a Riad if you can afford it, they are old-fashioned Moroccan houses turned into hotels. Often, they are extememley beautiful with the old archetechture (sp?) and fountains, and have more character than a hotel.
So... as with traveling anywhere, take caution, but don't worry too much. I hope you have a great time.
Oh my gosh yes! I just wish my poor friend new this before she went. She had a horrible bout of the "black nile". Needless to say more than she lost 30 lbs. by the time she came home a month later.
Like the OP, I too went to Marrakesh after watching & loving this movie a coupla years back. Spookily I too flew into Casablanca & later took in Fez but it was Marrakesh that is the stand out memory. An absolutely amazing & beautiful place - which I'm worried is soon to be ruined.
You see, my local airport in the UK (a small minor airport) has recently started return flights direct to the city for £50 ($100 US) & the influx of cheap tourism is bound to have a negative effect.
I'd encourage anyone to visit the place sooner rather than later, time may be of the essence :(
I watched on the ipad [iplayer] and lost the connection at about two thirds but really enjoyed the movie there are not many movies that ramble but trail out into beyond [could toy story pan out... uuum] kate winslet made this but the children's antics where really hype
crazy.. wild.. lovely
tourisium is out for me too much like ooh the twenty second century sooo many global problems
I watched this film AFTER having been to Marrakech on holiday. It was brilliant... the film brought back so many happy memories of a wonderful place THAT REALLY IS LIKE IT IS IN THE FILM.
