Can anyone tell me...?

In the episode THE MANTA MENACE, Dr. Manta imprisons Robin in a pit suspended midway down atop an artificial giant web, and menaced by a mutated spider crab that fires some kind of ray at him. Though it never really explained what the rays would have done to him if they hit him, can anyone guess what they might have done? Or why it never said?
