two things I always wonder about

Ralphie's fairy saddle. Was that some kind of calling card or mark of the beast type deal that let Linoge know that was the one? Because I'm also not entirely convinced that it was actually random, he manipulated the stones somehow. Plus, even though everyone else is scared and warning against Linoge, Ralphie likes him from the start, it's like they're meant to be

And the bringing up of Roanoke. It's implied that what happened there is part of a pattern. Do you think it means that:

A) Roanoke was a failed attempt before Linoge's predecessor found him

or

B) Roanoke was a failed attempt of Linoge's himself before he found Ralphie.

Because we know Linoge is extremely old but that's still a significant difference.

My impression was that Roanoke was Linoge's previous attempt to find an heir. Yes, he is dying, but he did say that he would still be around when the Islander's grandchildren were old. Four hundred years was still recent for him.

That's what I've always felt too.

Though, while understandably not mentioned in the story, I feel like climate change is also a factor here. Because a blizzard like this movie, who knows if that will be occurring anywhere or how often 400 years from now

I always wondered if Roanoke was a bluff by Linoge. And that maybe he wasn't the reason that colony disappeared, but he had the news reporter mention it in everyone's dream just to scare them about what he could do to them. There's a couple of details that don't make complete sense when you think about it, which is what makes me wonder.

1) Why would he have been in North America at that time? There were only two European settlements at that point (Spain had St. Augustine). So if you did get an heir, what would you do? Hang around the colony that just gave the kid to you? And if they didn't and you marched them into the ocean, then you're stuck there alone waiting for passage back to Europe, or you would have to target a Native American tribe.

2) Why would he wait 400 years before trying to again to acquire an heir? I know he said he's thousands of years old, and will still live at least a hundred more. But if he was worried about his mortality in late 16th century, and failed to gain an heir at Roanoke, why not try again a few years later? And he does make it seem like he was the one who did Roanoke.

But it doesn't specify his heir has to be of a certain race. Maybe he'd previously been going after Native Americans, since they were more isolated from the world. Also, we can see he flies, so I don't think he would've had to take passage on a ship. But I think the answer is in the question: isolation. Roanoke going missing wasn't even found out about for a while, and if he'd let Roanoke live, still less time and means for them to tell what had happened to the outside world.

And I don't think they'd necessarily have to hang around in the colony. Linoge is ancient and evil, he's not dependent on living in our societies if he doesn't want to be.
