Molly? (spoilers)

Is it me or was Molly the reason why most things ended the way they did.

Think about it. Kat told her that Mike wouldn't want her to be at the store, she did anyway, Kat and Reverend Ronnie told her not to open the bag that Linoge left, she did anyway, she was one of the sole voices that led to Ralphie being taken, she told Melinda to go first and she went aganist Mike, while her husband, Mike, was the ONLY person aganist what Linoge wanted. She left in his time of need and then married his best friend?! And Hatch, how close they were as pals and friends, why didn't Hatch stick up for Mike? In the scene in the Town Hall, Mike calls for Hatch to help him, look back at the scene and listen to Mike closely.Did anyone else think this? Why didn't she stand together with Mike, she lost her son for that. Maybe, if she didn't bring Ralphie to the store, and/or maybe she had kept an eye on him, Linoge wouldn't've wanted Ralphie?
Who knows? What do you think?

reply

Very good point! That explains Linoge's last words: Perhaps you tricked yourselves!

reply

I've wondered about that, too. Why did she go to the store, what did she think she could do, anyway.

I thought she was very foolish b/c in my personal life, my god father was a cop and never once did I hear his wife telling me she wanted to go out after him while he was on duty. She worried about him yes, but she didn't take to going out to find him while he was doing his job. Anyone that marries a cop realizes there is a certain level of danger that comes with the job.

I think Molly is the reason that many things in the story happened. I think that's why she mourns the way she does at the end of the story b/c she knows she's the cause of what occurred. Now I think if she had just gone on to the town hall like a rational person, Ralphie wouldn't have been taken. She reasons that he got lost in the storm and that may be how she copes with the situation but as the story is closing, she's still coming to terms with the role she played in her son's disappearance.

I think Molly's got a way to go b/c did you notice how she got defensive towards her therapist? Her therapist tries to sympathize with her about the storm and Molly reminds her that things are different for the mainlanders as opposed to the islanders when it comes to the storm.

A long way to go...

reply

Yes, it seems Molly is quite a B****!
But, in the end don't you think she paid for all her arrogance&became humbled?
She was rubbing Ralphie's name on the marker, and you could see the torment and pain in her eyes. Mike's voice-over said he decided not to tell her he saw their son, and Ralphie was alive&seemed well. Not knowing about Ralphie was torture for Molly&Mike knew that. Mike's silence was her "payment" for her guilt in what transpired, and Mike knows that has to be what Molly has to experience.

reply

No, Mike decided to spare her the torment he experienced when he saw the teenage Ralphie, hardly "alive and well" but rather given over and lost entirely to evil. Yes, he was tempted to tell her, to avenge her betrayal when she wouldn't stand with him in the church, but in the end, he decided to be merciful, although we may think she didn't deserve it.

It's pretty clear to me that he thinks Molly is better off than he is, because she's able to think of their son as dead.

Remember the voiceovers at the beginning and end of the series? Where Mike says it's a cash and carry world, you pay as you go, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. And then to further paraphrase, he says that he thought he'd paid up in the storm when he lost his son, and then he just discovered there was more to pay?

reply

Exactly. What Mike does for Molly there is a kindness, not a punishment... ironically, she gave her son as payment, hoping to save him... but... you can't make a deal with evil. She damned her son. Mike is just too kind to say "I told you so."

reply

^^Agreed. Mike spared her by doing that. If she had found out, she probably would've committed suicide like Sandy & Jack did.

Yeah, he definitely did it to further torture Mike. He had gotten the final laugh, I felt so bad for Mike, he was truly broken, the look on his face when he goes back to his car after that moment said it all.

She wasn't defensive to the therapist. She couldn't tell the truth. She repeated the lie and the therapist kept asking for a truth they were told not to give.

reply

What I found rather odd was that when told that her husband was bringing a murderer through the store she left her son to wander about by himself. You'd think she'd worry about his safety, not carry on as if he didn't exist.

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!

reply

Yeah, I really hated Molly. I thought she was a dumba** ***ch. She argued with Mike, she wanted to do it and then flips out b/c her child was taken. Well, hello! What did she think was going to happen if she lost!? Linoge was going to say "Oh, sorry, just kidding folks!"

What's the point of saying BUMP over and over again? It's so annoying! You're interrupting the conversation! stop doing that!

reply

You're an idiot.

You clearly don't know what BUMP is. They are posting "BUMP" to keep the thread alive and more visible on the board. If a thread is too old, it gets deleted.

When people "BUMP" something, they are both keeping the threat alive and trying to keep it towards the top so people can talk about it more, and they did this only after months and months passed with no discussion...so how is that interrupting the conversation?

Let me guess...republican?

nope that's just *beep* writing (as per usu with king). linoge knew he wanted mike's son bec mike was apparently the only strong, clear minded person on the whole island. it's like taking the son of the righteous man by means of other sinners bla bla bla it had to be that exact way.

reply

I always saw it because Mike was the only one with the balls to fight him, he beat Linoge's ass before he even put him in his cell.

Yes. The truth is that he always had plans on Ralphie. The entire town was chock full of sinners. He wanted the one man he couldn't have. Perhaps he wanted him to commit suicide. He wanted something from Mike that he couldn't get out of him because of his strength.

Agreed. I think he wanted Ralphie from the beginning, which also begs the question: if Molly had kept an eye on him, would Linoge have ever saw him in the first place. I think that's another reason why Molly was so sad & upset at the end. She realized that she should've stayed by Mike's side because Mike was right all along. Why give an innocent child to a being as evil and vicious as Linoge.

Well Hatch was a Barney Fife pussy. I would have killed that coward myself. And Molly was a complete moron. You can't deal with a stupid kid getting their fat head stuck in a staircase.Did you see how much space was between those stair railing? I could get a basketball though those railings and she can't even get a kids head back through. If I was Mike I would have taken all those people out after the storm.

Part of the power of Stephen King as an author is the fact that he writes epic battles and with epic themes.

Therefore, like Steinbeck, King often writes with Biblical themes. In Danse Macabre, King says that horror is essentially conservative, didactically presenting lessons regarding good and evil.

Mike said, "We can't do this - don't you see, it's damnation!" He means the damnation of their children's souls and their own. However, King is referencing The Fall in the garden of Eden which in the Bible is attributed first to Eve.

Molly is Eve.

If you don't believe my interpretation, I refer you to "The Stand", which is clearly a Biblical sort of battle.

What hump?

Molly going to the store didn't seem weird to me. Her husband wasn't a career cop; he was a part time constable on an island that probably hasn't had a murder in many years. I just figured she was concerned for his safety; and while she couldn't have done anything about it; she just wanted to be close to keep him safe. It did always bug me that Ralphie was running loose as that same loan murder suspect was being walked through the store. I guess she was too busy trying to comfort Katrina Withers to worry about where her son was at the time. :)

reply

You made a good point, she was talking to Kat when she lost sight of Ralphie, which then led Linoge to see Ralphie.

It may have been somewhat understandable, but it was also extremely unwise. Her husband wasn't a career cop it's true, but she wasn't even a cop, career or otherwise. She got flustered enough when Pippa got her head stuck in the stairs. How did she even imagine that being nearby was going to keep Mike safe? And even if she still wanted to be nearby, for God's sake, don't bring your young son to the one place where you know where said murderer's going to be stashed at.

As much as I'd be worried about my husband, I would have to trust that he would be able to handle himself because my son would not be able if the situation turned south.

It seems to me that while she probably was worried about Mike, the biggest issue was that she, just like everyone else that hung around the store, was curious and wanted to know what was going on. So that kind of fit's the "Eve" analogy as well.

Looking back on it, it appears that the supermarket scene in particular is forshawdowing what's to come. When Kat spoke to Molly on the phone to let her know what happened, she told her that Mike wouldn't want her to come to the store. So what does Molly do? She takes her happy a$$ to the store, along with her son. And as a result of going against what Mike (and good sense) would probably advise, Linoge snatches Ralphie.

I couldn't agree more. I think that was another mistake they made, just standing around the store like that. I think Molly's mistake was the true turning point in their marriage. It seems to me that Linoge had a fascination with Ralphie starting from the moment he saw him in the store, all because Molly brought him along.

You make an important point. Mike is not a full-time sheriff. This is a tiny town. His position is a tiny part-time position, which is why people don't do what he asks at first -- he has to remind them to treat him with respect.

Luckily for them, Mike just happens to be the best person in town.

I think so too. It was obvious that Linoge liked Ralphie from the beginning, always wondered what would've happened if Molly never brought him to the store though.

I have been posting that Molly is Eve. She definitely doesn't know how to fall in line and she is tempted by the stranger.

King is right horror is good and evil. You cheat on a college test you must be a sinner. That was the most that Legion had on Mike. He said you cheated your way through college and he left him alone.

Funny how Mike went back to school later and did well.
