worms + female genitals = ??????

Can someone please explain what was the point of the worm scene

reply

no point, just crap.

Some whores you pay 10 bucks are much cleaner that some actresses.

reply

Right. Worms and genitalia should never mix.

I thought the worms were some kind of phallic symbol. Segmented worms=castration? small penises? I'm sure Freud could have explained it but unfortunately he died thirty-five years before this movie was made.

Her fear of/disgust with her own sex. Part of her sexual awakening was dealing with that part of herself. Like when she's standing at the mirror and says she only likes to have one part of her body revealed at a time because she doesn't like looking at herself, or when she says her face and her vagina are too close (whatever that means, but it sounds negative). She has issues with sexuality, feeling dirty, while at the same time intrigued and wanting to explore it. I felt similarly when I was a young teen so I totally get that--I didn't masturbate because I thought it was dirty, and I thought vaginas were gross (I'm a lesbian now-go figure), yet I was intrigued by my urges and wanted to explore them. An interesting contradiction.

There seemed to be a lot of imagery around it. Throwing her underwear on a dog carcass is another example. So yeah, to me it seemed like she was battling a "sex is dirty and I'm bad for wanting it" mentality that so many girls, especially then, are raised with, and that came out in her fantasies.

I think it was just Catherine thinking up ways to shock the audience. The worm was unpleasant, but the vag shots were very nice!
