OK, what they did well:

Great world-building.
Good special effects.
Good casting.

And then...they slapped a crappy plot in. A huge rip-off of Event Horizon, which itself was a partial rip-off of Alien.

Can we have a story in outer space that doesn't degenerate into a kill-the-crew-one-by-one movie?

There really are all sorts of stories that can be told in space. We have decades and decades of sci-fi to work from. Why just re-hash the same plots, over and over?
