The book version is called The Secret of the Ruby Ring, and it's quite a bit different from the movie. Instead of being almost 16, Lucy is almost 11. Instead of being a scullery maid, she is actually a nursery maid who takes care of the two children in the household. And the book takes place in Ireland, where the movie takes place in the English countryside.
While I do love the fluffiness of the movie with the whole Lucy/Robert romance, I think the book would be good also. If you like Philippa Pearce's "Tom's Midnight Garden" or L.B. Hoff's "The Sandes of Time," you'll like this book.
