They could've survived if they werent' fooling around. They should have gotten the cells back to the other ship before the eclipse. Instead they were having drinks and exploring the area instead of just getting the hell out of there.

Partially - but remember Johns didn't want the power cells to get to the rescue craft until the last minute because Riddick could pilot it out and he knew he'd make a break for it.
They also had to patch the craft to restore hull integrity.
