The physics of space and space travel and the astronomical (in more than one sense) coincidences featured in this movie just make my head scratch.

It's very true that a two ringed planet as shown in the movie would not be stable - in other words, even if it started like that, it would end up differently. But I don't think they were going for realism...

A three star system itself is already unstable, but given the configuration shown in the movie, it was downright impossible - two stars next to each other at a close distance, with a third farther away. That would collapse in no time.

(Apologies for any mistakes in the details, I'm not a physicist, but this is what I gather from reading about it)
