'Perhaps Kobayashi's most sordid film . . .'

So begins the IMDB write-up. But it's sordid in a good way, right? Very enjoyable film, even with, or maybe because of, all the seediness and the sometimes grotesque minor characters. And then that apartment building . . .

Early work from a young Nakadai. He was playing a total thug. Even so, you cannot help bu feeling for him in the end. A wonderful film from the always underrated Kobiyashi.
