ReallY?? Last time i tried it kept crashing... i'll give it a second chance.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer, i thought nobody would come to this boards for months!

reply

I was playing it yesterday on service pack 2 with just the official patches installed, and i didn't experience any crashing or bugs.

Lucky you! I'm installing it right this second then and will look for those patches!

I could never play the first one... let's give it another try.

reply

You haven't played fallout 1? you're in for a real treat if that's the case.

Here's the patches:

That is the case my man... I've played the second, and lived just hearing others praising the greatness of the first one... it's installing right now, and if the link you are giving me downloads a patch that works for me, then if you ever happen to travel to Argentina you have a guy that owes you big time.

Thanks i billion for helping, in advance.

reply

Any problems? how did that installation go?

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Hi, well it's like this, the installation of the game i have stops at a certain point and a sign saying "this is not compatible with this version of windows" appears... anyway yesterday i was so worked up that i had to play it somehow, and i 've downloaded a RAR archive named "Fallout patch win XP" wich copied to my hard disc an installed playable game, I've now started playing and i am just finished killing all the rats out side the Vault and walked out the cave.

So far minor problems appear , like i received a mail and the whole screen erases and turns black but its just a matter of swinging the mouse all around the screen and it "draws it" back. that's a nuisance but a minor one since i can keep playing.

The problem i remember starts when i reach a place called Sand something or Sands , and it's like a small town, it used to crash at that point. I'll tell you in a while!

reply

That's pretty odd, i can't say that's ever happened to me when trying to install. Sounds like you've found a way round it so that's good.

That bug where the screen goes black was fixed by the 1.2 unofficial patch on the NMA website, so it's worth downloading. I've never had a problem with crashing in Shady sands, but that's probably fixed by the 1.2 patch too.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Ok, heres the latest report, for test sake I've just spent an hour killing every one in Shady Sands, saving and loading a lot you know ,pushing it.
The only two bugs so far is that the local main man with the robe and the spear disappeared after i killed him so i wasn't able to collect his stuff and the game crashed after 40 minutes aprox... BUT i could immediately reload the last save and keep playing... so as long as i save often i should be able to go on, it bothers but it's better than nothing. The only thing that would make playing it impossible would be if after a crash the saved slot broke , which i remember happening.

I read version 1.2 in the lower right so i guess it should be a patched copy already, i know that there is a 1.3 patch in the No mutants allowed site, but i'm afraid of completely mess things up... ill give 1.3 i try if the save slots start to break.

Thank for your assistance by the way.

"local main man with the robe and the spear"

Aradesh? he gives you a mission that leads you to a local raiders base (to save tandi). I can't remember him having anything lootable so it makes sense that he dissapeared.

It seems odd the game keeps on crashing. Did you have problems with fallout 2?

If you're patched to 1.2 then i wouldn't recommend going to 1.3 unless you need to get drastic.

No problem

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Just got back home from work, and i hope it wont start crashing on me now because i plan to play this non stop until diner and then as long as i can keep awake...

Yeah that was Aradesh alright, i see you know your stuff for real, when it comes to Fallout.

I'm gonna start playing it "seriously" but i can't resist the urge to go postal a little while and kill everything that castes a shadow...hehe.

reply

My luck is over dude... started crashing like hell right now...
Foking thing... it angers me a great deal...just when i think is done...

I don't know what happens...sometimes last longer sometimes starts crashing right away, is like it can hold for a certain time.

i'm gonna try to see if i can download somewhere i different version or something, or try the 1.3 patch to this one, but it doesn't look good.
Again, fock!

reply

Doesn't sound so good. Get that 1.3 patch installed and try running the game in Windows 95 compatibility, and see if that helps.

What error messages show up? just a Windows message telling you it had to close an unresponsive program?

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

I patched it already and started again.

Im at Shady sands again and started attacking, let's see what happens ...

The error is like this, screen turns black , nothing moves or appears, i have to push the windows button to go to the desktop where besides the Fallout bar there is another on with "application error" written upon it, i have to close that one in order to close the whole thing.

How do i run the game in Windows 95 compatibility? Sounds good that one.

reply

Right-click the fallout icon on the desktop and select properties. On the compatibility tab, tick the "run this program in compatiblity mode for" box, and then select Windows 95 from the drop down list. Click "apply" at the bottom right of the indow then OK.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Just did , wow thanks , i had no idea.
Sounds really good let's see what happen, im gonna call it safe only when im done shooting everything in shady sands and it didn't crash.

Thanks again dude, for real. Let you know.

reply

You said you had it running for 40 minutes didn't you? i think this is gonna be a case of "save frequently in different slots and pray" approach. As annoying as that sounds, it's worth it.

Oh yeah, quick gameplay tip, make sure you have some rope in your inventory....you're gonna need it.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Appreciate the tip , i hope i could put it to practice... because it would mean i can play it....

Out of a hunch i set the compatibility of the game to windows 2000 , because the version im playing ( the only version that would allow me to install) it's called win2k xp patch.

Anyway it just crashed it again so im gonna restart everything like you said, making it compatible to windows 95...

If this doesn't work either, im downloading 3 more versions of the game, and im gonna try with the those if this one really wont go. So i have some chances yet.

Oh the recent crash popped up this sign
"The instruction at 004d25c3 referenced memory at 91fd0024
The memory could not be written"

Im also gonna try to save and pray as you say.

Im also downloading a txt with eMule that reads "How to install Fallout 1 under Win2000-NT-XP"

Im gonna play this game, im going to buy me an old computer with windows 95 installed if it comes to that!

reply

What hardware are you running? it seems some graphics cards have compatibility issues with fallout under xp2.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

My graphic card is no big deal... GeForce FX 5500.

Should be fine...just done some searching and found this:

As a LAST resort try: control panel->display -> settings -> advanced - > troubleshoot and untick "enable write combining"

Interesting forum im gonna read it throughly

And will also try that last resort, problem is i have stuff in spanish so it doesn't read like that , but im gonna figure it out.

Again, thanks.

Friend im not only thankful for the interest you took in this but also impressed on how you don't give up and dig up new tries!

From your link it occurred to me to try to set the compatibility NOT in the patch version I've downloaded but from the setup.exe of my original game, and guess what it installed completely with no problem so far, i even gave it to HUMONGOUS installation...

I had no idea i could do that and that's thank to you.

Ok, im going to install the official patch and try it from this new installation now, it does feel better than to play it from that copied installed game that i downloaded, so let's cross fingers.

Shady sands here i come and hell follows with me!

Any problems?

"God was a dream of good government"

Yep no dice, man.
Still crashing even when the new installation looked so promising... It never ever blacked out for example-.

Im gonna try to patch this one with the 1.3.

I can try the panel control trouble shot thing because i can't make out where that stuff is,because i have it in Spanish.

Let's see with the 1.3 patch.

reply

Your copy of windows is in spanish?

Yeah i agree, try the 1.3 patch and see how things go.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Yes my copy of windows is in spanish...

Patch 1.3 in new installation failed too...
Im now going to just wait if some other versions of the game that i m downloading would work...because, if you have XP2 en are running the game with no problems, then it means there is a way it can fricking work...

reply

http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/win2k/setup/changeUI.mspx

You can change the windows language to english by following the instructions in the link.

Like i said, mine runs perfect. I bought the "fallout collection" about 2 years ago, after my original copy of fallout 2 broke. Maybe that is what's making the difference, all 3 games (including tactics) comes on one disc with a special installer.

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Good info, im going to download then some compression including the 3 games, chances are that maybe the same version you have would be in that archive...

Thanks thanks thanks.

reply

Hey, apparently good news...at least so far.

The Fallout Collection archive downloaded, i could install Fallout 1 without even make it compatible for no older version of Windows...

The good thing is that I've just finished killing everyone in (what i now know) is the first part of Shady sands, and no crash happened!, yet.(I'm saying yet ,don't want to tempt the luck).

It didn't even blacked out once and guess what, i discovered kids in Shady sands! There were no children in the version i was trying yesterday. So everything looks promising.

I'm telling you i was going insane, i downloaded DOS BOX and i was following a complicated "how to" to see if i could play the game in DOS...

So who knows , it would last like this? I hope so. It would crash further in the game , god i hope not.

The only last thing i want to ask you is this

The Game installed like this is version 1.0 and since everything was going well i dared not to patch it 1.1...

What do you think ? It's a risk that needs to be taken? In order to play the whole game? Or is the game playable like this even if i encounter some bug once in a while?

Well, thanks a lot for practically days of helping me with this, you were easily the nicest person i knew in this site.

reply

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I think that applies perfectly here. If it's working and you only encounter the odd crash then i wouldn't bother with patching. Like you mentioned in an earlier post, saving frequently and in different slots is the way forward, especially considering it's unpatched.

It's interesting that you mention children, because they were cut from the European release of the game. You only find it in the American version...i'm not saying that is whats made the difference, it's probably just a coincedence.

Hey, no problem and have fun

"God was a dream of good government"

reply

Hey guys , i was having the same problem.. could you tell me which one version was the one that worked? I really want to play this game too...

"I'm a Hero Hunter, I hunt Heroes. Haven't found any yet."

This is what i've downloaded using eMule:

http://www.wargames.com/images/fallout-collection-dvd-rom.jpg

It's version 1.0 , couldn't dare to patch it as its suggested ,and for now everything goes swell.

There is no way to find this in Argentina so the moderators will excuse me if i seem to advocate piracy .
