Only $5000? - Seems a bit cheap...

I love Duets. It really is an enjoyable movie. However, one problem I have always had is how small the grand prize is at the final competition. You would think that it would be at least $50,000 considering people from every state are showing up to compete. I guess the thrill of competition is part of the draw for the contestants. Still though, if people from all across the country are competing the prize should be a bit larger don't you think?

Ya just have to learn how to pay attention. Its a regional contest, not national. Only winners in select regional states together are in this specific contest. There are several regional contests and then there is the national. $5,000 is a lot for regional and it is a lot for the year 1998.

Thunderokc would be right if that's what the movie said, but vyperman, you picked up on it - the host, Maya Rudolph, specifically said that they had contestants present from every state in the union.

If it really were a regional contest, yeah, $5 grand would be about right. But for the national contest that Maya tells us it was? Yeah, you're right, that's waaaay cheap, even for 1998.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Old post i know, but...
It's karaoke, not American Idol! lol This is not some huge sponsored by a national network, major soft drink, althetic shoe competition, it's just a small-time karaoke competition. In my opinion, 5k is a pretty decent pot to have. Plus, like you said, I think most of the thrill is the performance and win, not necessarily the money amount. =)
