I think it's supposed to be 1999, however Skank is watching a hockey game on television that looks quite old, maybe mid to late 70's. It could be a taped game...however Skank cheers when one team scores (looks like the Canadiens)?

I would imagine they might have a hard time getting good reception way up there in Mystery, Alaska...maybe it's supposed to represent poor television reception?

reply

It was likely the time it was filmed because in the movie the TV Reporter says Gretzky is player of the month. So it would be anytime from the early 80's to 1999.

guys its 1999, skank is watching an old game, you can see the box of the game right below the TV

Yeah? How's that working out for you? 4 cups in 87 years, huh? At least the Isles are averaging 1 cup a decade. ;-) (just messing with ya)

During the move it said that New York Ranger forward Wayne Gretzky was the player of the week. Gretzky played the final three years of his career from 1996-1999 with New York. Therefore the film was set during that time period. Gretzky doesn't appear as a member of the Rangers during the actual game. However, the Rangers vs. Mystery game was played during the NHL All Star break. It is safe to assume that Gretzky was participating in all-star game events rather than traveling to Alaska for the special game.

reply

Actually, it doesn't say that Gretzky was a Ranger. They only say that he scored 17 goals and 22 assists. It could supposed to have been during his time with the L.A. Kings, or even the St. Louis Blues, as well.

Many of the characters were wearing Bauer Supreme Composite (AKA: "Comp") skates, which came out in 1995 and were all the rage for a few years. Both characters are wearing them in this faceoff - http://i.imgur.com/dy2hfsP.jpg. Those are the first year models too, same as I bought in 1995 and still have.

You can tell they are the first year model because of the small raised section of the sole back by the heel that says "COMP" on it (here's a better picture of that model of skate - http://i.imgur.com/u5KPQNj.jpg. The following year Bauer got rid of that, and also added the number "5000" to the "Composite" model name, like so - http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~schulze/pics/b5000.jpg, probably due to some people being confused about where they stood in the Supreme lineup (the Supreme 4000 had previously been the top of the line before the "Composite" came out, but the first year models had no number).

The Bauer Supreme Comps were as popular in the second half of the 1990s as the CCM 652 Vacu Tacks (http://www.hockey2k.com/photos/Collection_Pro_Stock/ccm_skates_VT_652. JPG) had been in the first half of the 1990s. The Mighty Ducks movies are a good example of this, i.e., in the first two (1992 and 1994), most of the characters were wearing 652s, and in the third one (1996), most of the players were wearing Comps. This accurately reflected their real-life popularity during those times, from the NHL to the Pee-Wees.
