Casting of Cage

He's always fun to watch but something seems off when Cage does 'normal', he seems phoney in the domestic scenes and his constant expression of revulsion at the porn-world he descends into seems forced. Cage is a mad bastard and I wouldn't be surprised if he's misused a gerbil here or a power tool there, so it's not surprising that playing a prudish family man who can't stomach hard porn feels like a stretch.

Oddly, he has played characters who are stoic and emote more credibly (like Cameron Poe in Con Air), perhaps if he dialled his performance back here it would feel more real, and contrast better with his crazier scenes later in

WORST actor
next to keanu reeves

I totally agree. Although I think he did put a very good performance, he's just not a quiet gentle family guy. It doesn't work. I think somebody like Tim Robbins might have been able to pull it off.

I liked Cage in the role but also would've loved to have seen someone like Mickey Rourke or James Woods in the role.

reply

Mickey Rourke would have been great ; very similar to his role in Angel Heart, in which he was outstanding.

reply

That's so funny, when I suggested Mickey Rourke, I was totally thinking of his performance in ANGEL HEART as well. Great minds think alike :) "You ever heard of Johnny Favourite?"

reply

Rourke is great in that film but, again, he’s not family man material. This needed someone like Harrison Ford who could mix up his famly man roles with private detective Deckard, or maybe Schumacher-favourite Kiefer Sutherland.

reply

I actually liked Cage in the role.

But if I had to recast in 1999, I would have loved to see Denzel Washington in that role.

I imagine something similar to what he did on Fallen (2 years prior) ...or Out Of Time and Man On Fire.

The movie plot line is what suffers the most here. Cage's casting couldn't save it.

reply

What’s wrong with the plot? It’s a fairly simple detective story 🤷🏻‍♂️

reply

GREAT MOVIE...BAD OPINION.

reply

Just think, this film was during his peak period!

reply

it may seem to be a bit of a stretch but i would have liked to see what a classically powerful actor, someone like a George C. Scott could do with a tough role like this one

reply

Gene Hackman

The majority of American movies seem to start Nicolas Cage ( Coppola ) or Liam Neeson. I am so sick of these guys.
