Redundant aircraft designer

If you are a aerospace engineer made redundant in the 80's do you;

a) Get a job in the booming civil and military aerospace industry in Seattle, California or Colorado and apply for a green card.

b) Sink all your money into a failed boatyard

I know most series have an unlikely premise, but there were plenty in that situation in my hometown (Preston UK) in the 80's plumping for (a) and none at all doing (b)

What utter crap you write!
The American Aircraft industry was on the slide during the 1980's so if this mythical aircraft designer thought of trying he would have been well and truly kicked in to touch.

even if he could have got a job in America (by no means a certainty) , he didn't want to go to America. He loved where he lived, and he wasn't exactly desperate - the mortgage on the house was paid off, his wife had a job, his son didn't want to go to university anyway, his daughter was having a gap year (and there were no tuition fees in those days).
