Felicity vs. My So Called Life

So, I'm watching Felicity for the first time. I don't know why I've never seen the show. I was 16 when it came out. I'm 29 now and I'm on the first few episodes and I just keep thinking to myself this is a mature version of My So Called Life. I keep thinking that Felicity is an older version of Angela - or Felicity is the way Angela would have been if she never broke out of her shell in High School. The show's vibe is the same too. The setting is dark and moody, the music is melodramatic, Felicity narrates her thoughts the exact same way that Angela did and the characters are strikingly similar in their mannerisms, the way they talk and their obsessions with each other.

I'm not sure if I like the show. I'll keep watching and give it a chance, but it's funny, watching this now when I'm almost 30 - is it bad that I like the way young adult shows are now than back then? Not ALL of them, but the good ones. I'm not sure why.

Hi! Interesting post. You're comparisons are right. It's funny- I just turned 33 and recently watched MSCL for the first time. I really liked it but like Felicity WAY more. I am sure that watching it as a teen may have made a difference. I was in college when Felicity aired. Loved it then, love it now.
Both Angela and Felicity are great characters though and I wish we could "see" what both of them are up to now!

I also agree that it's similar to a college life of my so called life.
And also brian from across the street is even on the Felicity show and he "dates" Felicity's roommate. I was wondering what happened to Brian. Even Angela'a dad liked him.

brian krackow

The guy from MSCL dates Felicity's friend Julie, not Megan, unless you're referring to Julie in the sense that she later becomes Felicity's roomate but only for a short time.

Angela would have never put up with some of the things Felicity put up with. Angela was a lot stronger to me. Felicity was a pushover many times, always accommodating people even when she suffered because of it. People did her wrong many times, and she just let it slide. I think Angela would have confronted more of the situations in a way that I would appreciate more than how Felicity handled them.

I think Angela's parents made her more independent. Felicity's parents made decisions for her and controlled her, which didn't set her up to be as strong as Angela. The show is about Felicity finding her voice and making her own decisions, which Angela did in high school.

PS--I'll take Jordan Catalino over Ben or Noel!!

reply

Jordan *Catalano*

I know it's only one letter different but his full name was mentioned often enough...as if no one would have known who they were talking about if they had just said 'Jordan'!

When i had a crush in high school, my friends gave him a pseudonym so that we could talk about him without revealing his identity! We would never mention him by his real full name while at school! People might hear!

The spelling Nazi strikes again!

Hard to decide! I enjoy both shows but I'm going to have to go with Felicity.

A true friend walks in when everyone else walks out

I am glad that the characters on Felicity don't say 'like' as often as the ones on MSCL do, but you could make a drinking game out of how often they say 'hey'!

I have to go with Felicity here. It remains my favorite TV show. Don't get me wrong My So Called Life is great, but Felicity just had way more depth and overall it is very close to my heart.
