$79.95 for the movie?

I have a VHS copy of this film and it says "$79.95" as the price on it. Why was it so much?

reply

Me too. It's sitting infront of me right now. back then that's how they did it. if they knew DVDs were coming out they would have known noone would have paid prices like that no matter how new the movie was.

T2 was $150+ when it came out on VHS.

that's the usual price that video store owners had to pay to buy the movie back in the 80s, and then they rented it out to customers to make the money back...at least that's my theory.

That was before people owing a movie was even conceivable. VCRs used to be $600 in the early 1980s.

I have other Trans World Videos and they all say "$79.95"

reply

true, even in the late 90's early 00's they where selling to video stores for 65.00

Yer all insane; this piece of drek can be had for under $3 on some trashy dvds.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

What does the DVD price of this movie have to do with what the other posters are talking about? Read again, they're talking about what video stores paid for videos back in the 80's, not the price of this film on DVD.

Hey, this guy's not gonna leak all over my ice cream, is he?

Its still dreck, lover.

It's true. Most VHS tapes were priced for video stores to buy and then rent, rather than for consumers which is why it was so high. There were exceptions, pretty sure Beverly Hills Cop was priced at $25 and was the first attempt to make it appealing to consumers. This occurred again with other hit titles. But something like this would have remained at a price point for the rental market which is why it's so expensive.
