Meredith not knowing?

spoilers!!

Maybe i missed something, but how could Meredith not have heard the fact that Dickie Greenleaf was dead? It would have been on the news, and certainly circulating around the crowds that she hung out with.

reply

You mean Meredith. Dickie's death wasn't established, because they had never found a body. Mr Greenleaf and the detective had just left, and Tom and Peter (as well as Meredith and her family) were enroute to Athens.

But Freddie's death would have been known by then. It's possible that Dickie's disappearance was being discussed and I am sure Marge would later share her suspicions that Tom had killed him.

But you raise an interesting point. Dickie was still considered missing and if Meredith reported seeing him on the boat, not knowing it was actually Tom, would that lead to further investigation? However, the ship's records and Italian passport control would show that it was Tom who had departed and embarked.

reply

Yes Meredith. Correction made.

reply

Yes. Even if Meredith for whatever reason didn't hear about Dickies disappearance, Tom would eventually paint himself into a corner. I can't see how he could continue to pass himself off as someone as well known as Dickie Greenleaf.

Of the expat group, he had only done so with Meredith, so his survival depended on either silencing her by offering her some explanation, or killing her, or disappearing so that he never ran into her again.

If he hadn't run into her on the boat, I think he would have tried to make a fresh start with Peter. But Meredith was always showing up!

You DID write "Meredith:", though in contet, it's clear that originally, you did write "Marge" but edited and corrected to "Meredith". But it didn't say edited...
