Strictly speaking the clap usually means gonorrhea. The pox normally meant Syphilis at the time the film was set. But certainly an std. Lol.

Pox was also a term for a bad infectious skin ailment of the nether regions, gonorhea, syphilis, warts. Similarly to how a lurgee was anything that involved the lungs, tuberculosis, pleurisy, pneumonia. It was ye olde speak for an STD.

The phrase 'a pox on you' meant "I hope you get a venereal disease, you less than hygienic bastard!"
