An incident of animal cruelty ?(spoilers)

If you've seen this little two-reeler then you know how Major absolves himself in the end. But was a dog actually filmed attacking and killing a coyote? I was a tad put off by that scene. Props to Tourneur if he pulled it off without harming any animals. It certainly looks convincing. Anybody know the facts behind the movie?

I have no knowledge of how the final scene was filmed, but I can tell you about the scene where the dog (Silver Wolf) was playing with the little girl and retrieving her doll. She slips and falls in the path of the car being backed out of the garage by her mother. The dog grabs the little girl with his teeth and pulls her to safety.
I was that little girl and I was heavily padded on one side under my clothing. The dog sank his teeth only into the padding and pulled me to safety.
My guess would be that the coyote was a stuffed animal during those few moments and that Silver Wolf ripped it to pieces.
