Just before he sneaks out of his window he goes to his computer and types something and this little robot thing starts walking. What was up with that? I never understood why he did that.

Why would he be worried about his parents getting on his computer when Aliens are taking over the world? I'd think that would be the least of his worries. Plus it still doesn't explain the robot that starts walking after he typed something on his computer.

Since this is all going to be hunches, my first thought watching the scene what that he was writing a note to his parents if they came back into his room that night and he wasn't there. Such as "I love you, in case I get body snatched and you never see me again".
No idea about the robot, other than it being a lame plot attempt to show that he was a nerdy kid that built a robot; and/or a wink to how the burrowing creatures move on land like the little insect robot.
