*Spoiler* Something terribly wrong with their plan?

The plan made by Jimmy and his college buddies doesn't really seem that well thought out.

They are under the impression that Nick has a great load of money from his father, so he would be willing to give 15k without hesitation - but the whole plan requires, that Nick is involved in a crime for which he recieves 10k.

Why would he risk anything for 10k, if 15k are pennies in his eyes? Please explain..

Also: Why is Nick so suprised that the criminal knows of his father? He knew he stole the money, he knew his phone number, he could have known anything. But Nick is totally shocked and runs into the other room to find his "friend" alive. Doesn't make that much sense.

reply

Exactly. It should'nt have been been surprised that the criminal knew his father. He knew everything else.

BIG SPOILER- When you're being threatened and kidnapped and blackmailed and things like that, you're not going to be thinking rationally about the big picture. YOU ARE GOING TO BE THINKING ABOUT HOW TO STOP THE BAD STUFF FROM HAPPENING TO YOU.

Next, the buddies honestly seemed to be convincing as professional criminals. Even when they showed themselves to be a "wealth" of knowledge. So, when you steal from a gangster pro, a professional drug runner, you have to figure that they are going to find out somehow. The fact that they showed themselves to be intelligent and seemed to have connections. You don't steal from criminals with connections. They find you out. And if they did figure out who he was, supposing they had been real criminals. They can find a number in a freaking phone book.

Lastly, the only person that he knew that was aware he was getting the money from his dad before the night of the heist was the guy he thought had been killed. However, two possibilities come up at this point. Either, the guy squealed about his dad and the inheritance before he was killed or it was just a huge scam.

There was also the peanut shells and the fact that some drug dealer wouldn't care who was the father of some moron who would dare steal from him.

i dont think he told his friend that he didn't get the money?

reply

No, he didn`t tell his buddy about not getting the inheritance.

reply

Yea, that part didn't make much sense

reply

Because it made him realize that they thought he'd had a big inheritance, and only Barry thought that. If they knew the truth about him they'd also know he didn't inherit anything. By mentioning his father's money, they tipped him off that they were basing their belief that he could pay on something only Barry 'knew' about.

reply

Well, they painted the job like it would be really easy-- they tried to convince him throughout that he was just a driver. So maybe they knew that he wouldn't be likely to take a job for money since he was now loaded anyway-- maybe they thought, though, that he couldn't turn a job like that down for 10,000 grand. PLUS his friend said, "Hey-- you'd be helpin' out a buddy" or whatever. So they kind of used that "you're rich, help out a friend, now, even if it's not for the money" thing to get him going.

Also, they were stupid and greedy-- we know that-- so maybe they were just counting on the fact that Nick would be greedy as well. Since they've been established as not so bright, maybe they didn't think that part through so well.

I think that the "Daddy's money" comment was just enough to make Nick pause. Maybe the guy could have come up with an excuse ("hey-- I know everything about you, *beep* or "your friend squealed right before I pepsi'd him") but that hesitation was just enough for him to notice the peanuts, a dead giveaway.

reply

Revenant1 is right. The friend, I think it was Barry, painted a picture of 'now that you're rich, help me to make some money'.

But the peanuts were what caused everything to unravel. When they were sitting in the car at the house waiting, Barry kept throwing peanut shells on the ground. When Nick saw them and heard Gangsta Lean talking about his dad, his first thought was Barry was alive and something was fishy.

Seriously, how many drug dealers/killers are going to run down to the store and buy you a bag of peanuts?

reply

Hey, i watched this movie up until the part where he asks his college buddy whether he wants to kill Reese Witherspoon right after he gets the Note off her. I didnt get to watch the rest but i really really want to know what happens. Can someone please tell me coz i cant find it on any spoiler sites. Thanks alot.

Re : sovok

**********Spoilers**********

You have to think of it through Nick's eyes and go back before you find out that Nick was being conned. The reason Nick is suprised by the dealer's knowledge of the father's money, is because there were only three other people besides Nick that knew about his father's death - Nick's lawyer, Lissa, and Barry (Nick's friend from work). Nick meets the dealer for the first time when he is initially abducted and threatened. Jimmy (the other man in on the job) is being tortured in front of him, so Nick assumes that Jimmy ratted him out on the robbery.

Now you are probably thinking, well couldn't of Jimmy spilled his guts about the father's death/money as well? Yes he could have. If Jimmy had already acted like he knew earlier, or if the dealer had told Nick that Jimmy learned of the money through Barry and that he wanted more because of it. But it didn't happen that way. Jimmy acted like he didn't know after the robbery was suggested, and the dealer didn't seem to know initially. So the only person who could have known about Nick's father dying and have an assumption about the inheritance was Barry. That means the dealer was going on inside info. Combine that with the peanut shells left by Barry on the ground, and the explanation takes care of itself.

peanut brains.

That is pretty weak. I guess just because they presented it as risk-free, and also he obviously has a history of shady dealing, so his friend has no reason to think he'll stop being that way just because of the inheritance.
