first off *beep* emos.. the emo trend is just another fashion thing. *beep* it. emo is not the new punk, there are still many true punks, its not about clothing, its about what you believe in. but in the fashion part of punk and emo, the emos stole a lot of punk things, like the a bandana around your wrist or back pocket, that started from punk, tight pants were started by punk, same with leather.

punk is not dead
its not emo
emo is its own little thing, and its dumb, all these dum kids wearin Converse an drawin on them to make em look cooler an guys wearin girls pants and their stupid little hair and its just,, *beep* DUMB. the emo trend is the dumbest trend since disco probably, they all bitch and complain aww life sucks i wanna die. and havin screennames like xXxdeadlyXkissxXx... whats up with the X's tards?
punk will never be what it was in the 70's an 80's... but its NOT emo

punk will never die

In the words of Jello Biafra; "Punks not dead, it just deserves to die when it becomes another stale cartoon"

Whereas I love true punk music, I can't be bothered debating this stupid topic anymore. Punk isn't dead, but the existence of it isn't significant enough to me to argue over. I appreciate those who have followed punk their whole lives, but in the end it is simply music, and music to me is not that damned important to argue over. If it's alive in your soul then the opinions of others mean nothing.

I totally agree with you. Punk is definately not dead emos just gave real punks, goths, metal heads etc a bad name because of emo kids now everybody just assumes that the real metal heads and *beep* are emo as well. Emo kids stole our style and made it really *beep* Emo kids *beep* ruined everything i hate those goddamn mother *beep* pieces of *beep* They have there stupid hair that is always in there eyes, they wear stupid shoes and have a bad style of clothing and they buy it all from poser stores like west 49 or the boathouse. They complain about everything and are so over sensitive and they talk about kililng themselves yet they never *beep* do it. See the diff between emos and punks, goths metal heads etc are if you made fun of an emo kid they'd cry about it, if you make fun of a punk, metal head etc... we would punch you in the *beep* face and not cry about it or simply make fun of you back. emo kids suck and should get it over with and actually cut there wrist the right way. Emo has nothing to do with punk, goth, metal head, grunger...

reply

I totally agree with you except you lump together punk, metalhead, goth....these are not the same. Other than you bad a good point!

reply

I just lumped them together because my group of friends consists of all of those types, but thanks for agreeing with me!

Are we like best friends now that you've seen whats inside my freezer

Everybody bites off other people's style. Get used to it. Stop trying to pretend you're all so different and special.

reply

punk is a state of mind, obviously it isnt defined by fashion or even music.
pythagoras was a punk, socrates was a punk, so was hendrix, and rachmaninoff, and hitler and ghandi.

You are all just debating about the candy wrappers

reply

and every single one of those persons had a fashion to define them as who they are. a visible outward slogan for who they are and how you can tell them apart from the crowd.
yeah this debate and emo as its now been turned into is all about the wrapper.
as viva death said, they are handing contracts out like candy bars these days down at the rock shop.

Some how, when you open your mouth to speak all I hear is the looney tunes theme song.

There is a MAJOR difference between PUNK and EMO, man .. Besides writing a rant to point out all the obvious differences between the two, I'll just say, put a wimpy little emo in a fight against an ACTUAL punk and let's see who walks away from it. Sure, the emo kid will be crying and most likely bloody, but, isn't that just going to get them the attention they all crave, anyway?

Actually, emo was an offshoot of punk: it's short for "emotional hardcore." There have been some good things that have come out of the emo "genre," it's just that it's been horribly disfigured by trendy kids, kinda like punk. Or anything else that gets popular, for that matter. You just have to be willing to sift through the dredge to find something you actually like. Again, same as anything else.

Emo music is okay. I prefer what was called "punk" from the mid 80's to the early 2000's (a vicious rumor states that that wasn't really punk because it had "nothing to rebel against," or that it "all sounded the same," or some *beep* like that; I don't really care if it was or not) or the second and third waves of ska, but it's still okay.

So there's your neutral point of view (kinda). I won't discuss who could kick who's ass, because that's kinda pointless and stupid. "My dad could beat up YOUR dad." Anyhoo...

Well, Calamity Taco has it pretty much right. Emo started around 1986 when the first wave of hardcore was coming to an end and everyone was just fed up with the hardcore scene. So a lot of post-hardcore bands came about and coined the term "emotional hardcore". The *beep* that's around today that people call emo doesn't deserve to be in that genre. All these bands are just "alternative rock" *beep*
Here's a list of "emo" bands that should be checked out.
Fugazi
Embrace
Rites Of Spring
Sunny Day Real Estate
Gray Matter
Texas Is The Reason
Indian Summer
Braid
Cap'n Jazz
Piebald

There's so many more, but that covers pretty much all the bases and different eras of "emo".

reply

emo kids = scene kids.

Not related to punk at all.

Everyone needs to get off emo's ass. Get over it. I'm so tired of everyone giving s**t to them all about it. Big deal. They like to sit alone and contemplate. Years ago they would have been Existentialists. Every genre of music has people who take it too far. It doesn't matter. People need to quit being such d**ks and leave it alone. Everyone loves to hate everyone because of how they dress or whatever. There are people who are just as sick of punks strolling around, little wangsters in suburbia talking with a ghetto drawl, and people rocking the big belt and cowboy boots when they've never been below the Mason-Dixon line. Get over it.

i think indie is worse.

reply

To me it seems that indie and emo are almost interchangable (along with almost any 'popular' music nowadays that has guitars/bass etc. (so no rap/hiphop or pop music))
I mean I hear an emo song from say.. i dunno fall out boy
and then i'll hear the 'latest indie hit' from... i dunno 'i live in my moms basement' or something.
and it all sounds like the same style of music to me. lyrical content might be a bit different. but same basic style/meaning, whatever you wanna call it.

I've also realized my major big problem with emo (beside the fact that i hate the music). is that ok. to paraphrase an earlier post (sorry can't remember who posted it)
"emos like to sit alone and contemplate, years ago they would've been called existentilists"

well.. no. they sit and contemplate "nobody likes me, no one 'gets' me, im so alone in a sea of blackness etc. etc. etc." Which ok is a whole regular 'teen angst' thing. everyone kinda goes through that period of their life. no issue there.
But emo is SO self-centered. i mean with punk. It's a pissed off music movement.
no one cares about you? fine. your pissed b/c no one gives a ****.
the gov't certainly doesn't care and seeks to use you. so **** em.
as Johnny Rotten said "Anger is an energy"
and it is, if your pissed off about something. your not gonna spend hours alone in your room whining to yourself. MAYBE JUST MAYBE you'll get some passion in your eyes and go DO something to change what makes you so mad.
Ok this was a giant rant but i hope i made some small amount of sense.

you stupid people have no clue what your talking about. the first "EMO" or whatever the *beep* you call it band is Fugazi. Fugazi evolved from Minor Threat, one of the best heardcore punk bands around. Emo and all the other cliche "scene" styles of music is just punk evolved. Sub genres of punk. its all punk in the end. after all, isnt punk about being different, and not giving a *beep* about what others think? whats more punk rock than emo? nothing...because emo is about expressing your feelings, and if you cant do that, your a poser.

reply

It all started with Punk yeah. but Goth is an off shoot of punk and Emo is an off shoot of goth. Emo (or emotional hardcore for the *beep* Is usually a bounch of whiney little bitches, but id like to see you say that a friend of mine is emo and that punk is dead..i think he'd be liable to kill you. No promises. its all about mind set, and what you like if you like to sit in the corner and cry and complain about life, your *beep* emo. If you like to get out, have fun go to parties and listen to hard music, chances are your probably Punk. Who really cares its all just music and labels and *beep*

reply

how is cutting crying and drawing hearts on your body anything like punk?

reply

You dont know what you are talking about, im sorry.

Punk, was all about rebellion against popular culture.
Emo, is a popular culture for children who think they are musical or enjoy music and feel the need to tell everyone that they are depressed. The two are not even close. Its like saying, "Communism doesnt exist now, its just called Capitalism"

Its just a totally illogical statement.

"I am Jack's cold sweat."
