Can't believe Burton directed this...

I thought he is a cool director. But, in this movie he just mediocre.

To be fair, he was brought on in the last minute by Fox and I believe that the film was brought forward, so it was sort of rushed. He wasn't allowed to do what he wanted and he found himself in continuous conflict with Fox and their wishes, so much so that he said that he didn't want to work with Fox again. Not saying that he wasn't at fault for some of the failings, but he was dealt a bad hand to begin with.

Can't believe Burton directed this...

Why is that surprising? Burton is all visuals and no* story.

* or minimal at best.

Maybe, but this movie didn't have any of his visual trademarks. Even when he's out of his comfort zone (BIG FISH; ALICE), he can still make a good-looking film. But there's nothing memorable the visuals here.
