One Thing

this film's much maligned ending gave us was the ape planet most like the one in the book.

I hope the next new ape movie is set far enough along in the story to feature a more advanced ape civilisation than any of the original films or the TV series had the budget to show.

I thought so too... Granted it could have been executed better, but as a whole I liked it. The trick I had to use, was to view it not in the actual series but as a completely different story. Just like with comic books, there are variations of the same characters across a multiverse. The problem with most people is that they can't seperate the stories. I enjoy films better with the understanding that different versions are going to have different focal points. Having an open mind is desperately needed with the way studios are churning out reboots constantly....

Yes, reboots are inevitable. The Greek myths even, have many variations of the origin stories of heroes.

Everything gets rebooted eventually, from Batman, to James Bond, to Sherlock Holmes, to Dracula, to Tarzan, to Superman, to Star Trek recently. One can enjoy reboots a lot more if the viewer totally distances themselves from the original iterations. Enjoying Olivier in Hamlet doesn't mean you can't enjoy Kenneth Branagh in a different interpretation of Hamlet.
