POTA Got Rebooted.......

which means there never will be a sequel to this film. That's not right considering the door was left open for one. The surprise ending will remain an unsolved mystery.

Sometimes that's a good thing. 2001 was better as a standalone film so you can debate and question the film, 2010 and the sequel books kind of ruin that in a way (although they aren't bad).

Nah. I liked 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT, and most sequels for that matter. Some think the original APES film shouldn't have had sequels, but I'm glad it did. Not only does that film technically not have much closure, but I personally enjoyed BENEATH more.

I would've liked a sequel or two to this version, especially since it could've been more like the book with apes using modern technology.

SPOILERS

It's not really an unsolved mystery......time doesn't travel straight through an electromagnetic field. That's why the space station Oberon arrived at the "ape planet" many years before Leo (Wahlberg's character) did. And why Leo arrived before his chimp did despite the chimp entering the electromagnetic field first, Leo second, and the Oberon space station last. Thade (presumably) fixes Leo's space pod and entered the electromagnetic field, chasing after Leo. Thade arrives at Earth years before Leo and revolutionizes Earth into an ape-dominated society.

Mystery solved.

So the film still works as a stand-alone film just fine - but there could've been some interesting places to go with potential sequels. Leo is now back on Earth, the home he knows never existed, and Earth is dominated by Apes. Lots of things they could've explored with potential sequels.

While the film was a financial success, I don't think 20th Century Fox felt confident in a sequel based on the very mixed critical response.

Never say Never. In this age of rebooting anything goes. And nobody but fans care about logical time lines when a buck can be earned.
Anyone from my generation thought that the Sean Connery Bond was over with in Diamonds are Forever. He came back in 1983.
Harrison Ford was glad to see that last of the Han Solo costume in 1983. THE FORCE AWAKENS came along. Ford bitched endlessly about Blade Runner...and he's back again this year in a "sequel" or whatever it is to a film NO ONE ever thought would be made.
2 different HULK flicks only 5 years apart.
maybe in another 10 years someone will reboot that films timeline.
