Cypher meeting Agent Smith

Just watched this again and started wondering how Cypher was able to meet with Smith. Being sent into the Matrix required an Operator so how did Cypher get into the Matrix on his own?

Just wondered if anyone had some thoughts on this.

Common thought is that he wrote a program to eject himself automatically. Maybe set on a timer, so he'd have to be at a specific place at a specific time (which would mean that Operators wouldn't be 100% unneeded).

The other usual theory is that he was working on the program and/or coming in/out of the Matrix when Neo "sneaks up" on him. (Cypher jumps a MILE like he's doing something bad).

It could also be that Cypher wrote a program which would cloak his activity with Smith - disguise the Agent program code with something else.

That idea works well. I'll have to watch it more closely next time.

I was also wondering about the plugs on their bodies. Is there any explanation as to why they're not removed?

Is it too dangerous to remove them maybe?

Thanks for the reply.

Well, the main plug at the base of the skull is used for jacking in to the matrix, so they clearly need that one for practical reasons.

I'm not sure what the other tubes do. Could be that they monitor the health of the person or food tubes or in some other way they sustain the person that's hooked up. Whatever the machines' reasons for having them, it doesn't seem like the humans outside of the matrix have a use for them.

I assume that you're correct: it's too dangerous. Some of them are, what? a half an inch or more across? That kind of hole in a body would be a hotbed for infection post-surgery. The Nebuchadnezzar ain't no sterile OR. That's just the surface of the plug, too. If they're connected to the nervous system or anything else delicate, it might require delicate surgical procedures to remove them - if it's even possible.

They have to find an exit from the Matrix because the Matrix doesn't allow programmes to come and go. When Agent Smith realises the 'mole' is real he (or the Matrix) allows Cypher to enter and leave the Matrix manually. The Matrix wanted the access codes and location of Zion, so tracing Cyphers (and Morpheus) ship wasn't the goal.

Great point.

".. it doesn't seem like the humans outside of the matrix have a use for them."

What do you mean by 'humans outside of 'The Matrix'? The humans that have the plugs and can visit 'The Matrix', but happen to be outside of it most of the time, or the humans that do not have the plugs, and can never visit 'The Matrix'?

The 'plug'-people seem to be able to utilize these plugs, as Neo still has something plugged into his hand socket when he wakes up, that he then slowly removes just before Morpheus comes in (if I remember correctly).

The non-plugged people, obviously, do not use such tech, because they don't need to be stimulated by the machines that way.

I meant that the skull jack (on the neck) still has a use (jacking into the matrix), but that the arm holes (spine holes, etc.) don't seem to be in-use after they're pulled out. They only put on into the skull.

There is one time we see Neo with one in his forearm, but only once, and I assumed that was a nutrition pump before he was conscious enough to feed himself.

Maybe the requirement was an operational command rather than a technical necessity.

plot hole.
