Why these religious symbols?

Its no secret that The Matrix and its trilogy puts a lot of emphasise on religious symbols. I wonder why? I cant imagine the watchovskis (sp?) being religious so why use that?

I have no sig.

Why can't you imagine it? They do have some religious beliefs since they've stated a long time ago that they're "non-denominational".

To make things a tad more interesting and maybe purposely complex. I dunno, I feel it makes sense to include these references in such a film.

Why not? Neo is clearly a prepackaged and modernized messiah, one which is found in all religions since time immemorial. The film creates it's own world, and one of the ways to make it believable is through spirituality and religion. Look at the Star Wars films, they do the same thing. Why? Because Homo Sapien sapien societies and civilizations always have a religious/spiritual mysticism belief-system, every single one. To make a world/society that's fiction be realistic/believable, you need these mysticisms/fate/spirituality/religion/etc to sell it to the public.

That's how anthropologists study how sentient an organism/primate is, if they believe in an abstract concept or a God/gods/another invisible world affecting reality/etc.
