I don't understand, Mrs. Tingle says that she hates Leigh Ann - blah blah blah, but why doesn't she hate Trudy? She gave Trudy A's and stuff, but not Leigh Ann? And you saw Mrs. Tingle's reaction when she thought she shot Trudy. Then she says it was an accident, and thought that it was Leigh Ann that she shot --

Leigh Ann needs the scholarship from being valedictorian so she can leave town, go to a good college, and become a writer. Trudy comes from money and doesn't need that scholarship. Leigh Ann reminds Tingle of herself at the same age, and her bitterness leads her to sabotage Leigh Ann out of spite.

shareIn high school, valedictorian is the person who graduates at the head of the graduating class, usually determined by GPA and other factors that serve as tiebreakers (since it almost always takes a 4.0 GPA and several students will get that). Tiebreakers can include extracurricular activities and a faculty vote. Sometimes the students also get to vote.
shareHuh....I'm sure there were other scholarships to other high level schools for people who aren't Valedictorian. I mean, number 2 is pretty damn good. I don't know what all the fuss was about. I'm sure she could have found more scholarships or gone to different schools.

Because Leigh Ann has everything going for her. She is smart, beautiful, has this very innocent look and attracts a lot of guys. Trudy is just another nerdy girl who studies a lot, but has nothing else going for her.
If any of the two is likely going to succeed in life, it is definitely Leigh Ann.

Three reasons 1) Trudy was an @$$kisser, as even that other teacher pointed out. 2) She realized Leigh had the best chance of making it, and probably saw Trudy, being her biggest rival, as an ally. 3) With Trudy's snobby, stuck-up, self important attitude, Mrs. Tingle realized that it would be her downfall later in life no matter how smart she was, so she didn't think she would make it and therefore didn't bother to ruin her since she would eventually do that to herself.
