The significance of the Tomatoes????

While Matt, his wife, her friend, and Nimi are touring the garden; Matt's wife picks one of the unripe tomatoes which seems to make Nimi mad and she leaves the party. Then at the end, Matt shows up at Nimi's wedding with bunches of tomatoes. What do the tomatoes represent in this film?

Hi Piano. I'm glad to find others who appreciate this movie like I do. Hopefully the discusssions will grow.

Now regarding the tomatoes...in short Matt was throwing temptation in Nimi's way by showing up at her wedding to tempt her to leave the constipated reverend?

The scene you mentioned is definitely very sexy. And Colin looks so hot laying there. It's hard to pick just one!

Hi there! Great to find other people love this movie. I've heard a lot of criticism whenever it has come up before. I agree the tomatoes represent temptation, they are called the love apple sometimes. I think the wife picking the tomato before it is ripe is an attempt to come between Matthew and Nimi and prevent the inevitable. It is also a bit destructive, as the tomato is wasted.
I would be hard pressed to pick one moment as the sexiest, there are so many. Not just the love making but the bit where he makes her say his name has a lot of sexual tension too.
Do you think the fact that it is multi-racial has anything to do with the criticism? I didn't think Colin fans were like that.

I noticed Matthew looked a little upset when his wife picked the green tomatoe and it looked like he watched Nimi to see how she took this. I just realized Scary from what you said about picking the tomatoe before it was ripe, she did not want to see Nimi and Matt's budding relationship grow...ripen! Ahhh the symbolism!

I think this film is a lot more subtle and deep than a lot of people realise. I love the relationships between the women too, although the Matthew/Nimi one is obviously the point of the movie. As other people have said, the chemistry was great between them.

Scary, I meant to respond to the multi-racial aspect but pressed the post reply too quickly. All I can say is I hope it is not being criticised due to that. I kind of noticed how there was no message board for this movie too, which is why I decided to start one.

And you're right. There are deeper aspects to this movie. I had to watch it more than once to see this. Did you notice the plant in Nimi's room and how it had bloomed? Remember the beauty salon scene where one of the stylists mentioned how someone must've been having a lot of sex because the plant was growing? When the plant is first shown it had no flowers, but after Matt came to Nimi's room, it was full of blooms?

Glad you started the threads Reverie. I hope it's not that too, it's just that they never give a reason which suggests it's something they can't mention. It may just be that they can't follow the dialogue or don't like the near nude scenes, but they usually mention things like that. I like the fact that it's multi-racial and multi-cultural, it makes it more interesting somehow.

I remember someone saying on another board that this movie is cliche. I disagree. I've never seen a romance of this kind which combines the African culture, open marriage, single mother aspect before; which is what makes it so different.

reply

That astonished me too! I don't see how it can possibly be a cliche! It is so different and has many original aspects to it. I gave it nine when I rated it.

I'm so glad you started the threads on this board because I just love this movie! I was actually surprised how much I did like it because I'd heard such negative things about it.

About the tomatoes - I too had always wondered about the significance of them and I'm struck by the symbolic aspect of them that folks have raised here.

I totally missed the symbolism of the plant! Wow - lots of symbolism in this movie. I will need to rewatch it in light of the observations mentioned here.

Guess none of you posters ever ate Fried Green Tomatoes...if you have had the

chance to try them you will know that an unripe tomato need never be wasted.

They are delicious!

When does Matt collapse in the car? I taped this movie off Lifetime and I think they cut that piece out. I don't believe there's any reference to Matt collapsing or having a heart attack in the version that airs on Lifetime.

I've got to find a copy of this film that's not all cut up!

Sorry Cologirl for not responding earlier. I meant to answer your post and got sidetracked.

There is a scene where the elders come to Nimi's family to inquire about her. They start to haggle about the dowry and Nimi's family wants Sammy to bear Rev. Fola's name. Fola is reluctant to do this which makes Nimi angry and she leaves the meeting. Fola follows her outside and tries to console her with a hug. Matthew comes to visit Nimi or Sammy and sees this. I believe this upset him and agitated his heart condition (which Nimi says she read about in a newspaper article). Some of the Da Silva's neighbors find him collapsed in his car and come to the Doctor (the man who represented Nimi in the dowry meeting) for help.

I think Colin looks his hottest in this movie, and I wish I could get a still of him touching his lips and one when he's lying there smiling at Nimi. Those two shots would make great screensavers!
