Questions concerning Homer and Valentine in the car.

After the boys get in trouble for possibly starting a fire there is a scene in which Homer is depressed. Valentine comes to him to give him comfort (what a sweetheart Valentine is)! She smiles at him very sweetly and the next thing we know they are sitting in the back seat of a car, apparently out "in the boonies." somewhere. First of all, whose car are they in? Homer didn't have a car. Is it his parents car? Is it Valentine's car or possibly her parents car? Secondly, a group of people come shouting at Homer to tell him about the mine accident. How did these people know where to find Homer? They couldn't possibly have had any idea of his whereabouts.

I had the same reaction. What was going on there? I guess I assumed Homer borrowed his parents car to go to the dance. I guess I also assumed they were at the local make-out point or lover’s lane for all amorous teens. I guess I assumed that the friends say Homer and Valentine heading out that way.

If you read the book you'll find that the car belongs to Valentine's boyfriend. The circumstances is a tad bit different than what's shown in the movie and it doesn't relate to his father's accident. It's a pretty odd situation as you read about it but I guess it's the result of a different time and culture.
