Love great Sc-Fi......

With massive Naval overtones and acclaimed actor Jurgen prochnow, this should be great, right? Like Das boot in space.

Wrong!!

Love great Sc-Fi.... But this certainly isn't it.

This movie really wasn't supposed to be a great sci-fi. I also don't know what great sci-fi is since there's so little of it out there.

This was a 30 million dollar video game adaptation movie in the year of 1999. Not sure if you were around for movies in that decade or not, but if you were you know ... they were interesting times for movies, and right before movies started changing with the advent of CGI.

No one thought this movie was going to be good, or even great. It did like 12 mil in the box office.

Back in 1999 it was considered bad (though I enjoyed it back then for what it was). Today? It's considered a very fun and entertaining flick and a very nostalgic movie with a pretty good cast in it.

While this wasn't great sci-fi, it's a fun movie to watch now. But if you think it's great going in, you obviously would get the takeaway you had. Just like it for what it is: a nostalgic 90's cheesy action flick. Today, I'd pay so much money to get these types of movies made again. They are so much more enjoyable than the garbage shoved down our throats today.

Jurgen was abducted by this movie from the wastes of Megacity One in Judge Dredd land.

Y'know I am a huge fan of 'the Game' & the franchise, and I especially like the fan made campaign (lovingly stitched together by using the "Freespace 2" open source code); I look at this & I wonder, what with CGI tech getting cheaper, why something like Syfy can't cobble together a decent series/miniseries based on the franchise. It could probably look as good as the Battlestar Galactica Reboot. You don't need tens of millions of bucks. Malcolm McDowell commented that when he worked on "StarTrek Generations", it cost 35 million dollars; meanwhile his work on Wing Commander III only cost a couple of million.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Point taken, but in all honesty being too ambmibtious doesn't cut it for me.

Great sci fi of the time.... Matrix (budget of 60 mill)
Starship troopers (100 mill)

A different type of movie... David Cronenbergs Existez (15 mill)

I personally don't think (budget withsatnding) this film is great. Even the story line sucked... And like most movie game adaptations... Why go there.
Still, we're all entitled to an opinion.

Im 37... So remember the 90s well, but for more contempary great sc-fi and because you asked what constitutes it... Two Words... The Expanse..

Totally agree with you on the casting though... Definitely the major selling point of the movie.. and the reason I watched it.
