Are there any games like this being made today?

These types of games got me hooked on PC games.

I used to play Phantasmagoria, Phantasmagoria, puzzle of the flesh

Gabrielle Knight, The Beast Within

These were great games.

I can't for the life of me find any "modern - day " games that use full motion video.

I looked on justadventure.com, but can't see any games similar to this.

Any suggestions?

I agree. Phantasmagoria and Gabriel Knight- The Beast Within are really the greatest games ever made.
So sad they just don't make them like that anymore...

LOL! I didn't answered your question though... I don't really know? I wish I could find some too... What made them stop making games like that?

All Singing! All Dancing! All Flesh Eating!
Cannibal! The Musical

- More money in developing console games.
- More money in multi-player online games with monthly fees.
- Lack of original ideas.

They did make Phantasmagoria 2, but it didn't do as well. They changed from haunted house themed game to a story involving an evil parallel universe/dimension.

Well, there are 'Runaway: A Road Adventure' and it's sequel 'Runaway 2: Dream of the Turtle'... That's some pretty good Point&Click games.

But still... you can't beat the classics like Gabriel Knight 1+2, Phantasmagoria 1+2 and Monkey Island 1+2. Those were awesome!

I once purchased a game that is a bit similair to the motionpicture gaming
u'r refering to.. it's called harvester..
it's a pretty sick game though

reply

They basically stopped doing interactive movies as the production budget was significantly higher, what with hiring actors and film crew to create games that simply weren't amazingly long and also took up great amounts of data space. That's why nowadays they get actors to do voice-overs and do everything else on computers as it's faster, cheaper and uses less space

a great adventure game along the lines of this one and gabriel knight is Pandora Directive

reply

it's better that they don't, because looking back at it, it was just a crappy game and crappy acting and it didn't involve much of you to actually play, just point and click. seeing as how the early-mid 90's tried to use FMV as gameplay was cool, but just plain because it didn't have much of a visual 3D stimulant. For some reason, this reminds me of the FMV shooting game Mad Dog (I could never actually get that game to work, the shooting was terrible.) Good thing the CD-I faded quickly and silently, it was just a waste.

I loved this kind of format. Another one you could check out that was decent is Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls. The original Shivers was pretty ok, but not nearly as.... how to put this.... challening? Shivers was a game I probably could have beat in 8th grade without much thought (there are about 2-3 puzzles in it that are a little tricky).

reply

Lol. That's funny. I actually did beat Shivers in 8th grade. It was still a good game though. I want to find it and play it now...

Well if you think about it. It was usually Sierra who made those games, then they made Half-Life in 1998...
I think the success of that game made them drop the whole point and click genre... Unfortunatelly :-(
I loved Phantasmagoria, Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh and Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within... And I'm still looking for Harvester. I remember it as being quite disturbing...

reply

Wow, I can't believe the one I'm thinking of hasn't been mentioned.
Virgin Entertainment worked with a company called Trilobyte to create a trio of horror puzzle games. They were The 7th Guest, The 11th Hour and Clandestiny. 7th Guest and 11th Hour were a short series and Clandestiny was a game on it's own. They're all pretty good and should be checked out.

reply

The 7th Guest and the 11th Hour. Both ancient, but they had solid puzzles and were this type of live action format.

reply

I never understood why today with all the new technologies, why don't they do games like that anymore?

They could put a game like that in HD.
Space wouldn't be a problem with Dual layer dvds or even Bluray.

Full motion video game were great cause it was real, it was like if you were controlling a movie. Now It's all about 3D :(

reply

This one was the best. Other good ones I went through are Ripper, Necropolis and Realms of the Haunting. Those all need to be remade with todays better graphics. There's nothing like them now and they would be a big hit.

reply

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy is a game within the same genre. It has 3d graphics, but i was relieved to finally play an interactive movie game again.

reply

Wow! I started to tink I was the only one who played Realms of the Haunting. It was such a sleeper. I loved Necropolis too. I still have both games, I think.

reply

I'd recommend Burn: Cycle, Reaper, Cluedo (CD-i) and Harvester to you. Very unknown games, but EXCELLENT if you like the GOOD range of FMV titles.

reply

Even though they're kind of old, you should check out Shivers and Shivers:Harvest of Souls. Awesome games in the point-and-click style.

Also, there are a few free on-line games like this. Search for Exmortis and Exmortis 2 by Ben Leffer. They are short but cool.
