Yeah its an old abandoned horse racetrack that was built in the 60's and closed after only 2 years. I actually went there today to explore it and it was really interesting. I haven't seen this movie yet but will definatly rent it just to see that building in it, hahaha. Something about the structure really interests me. I've lived in arizona all my life and ever since I was little I remember seeing that strange sinister, almost bomb-shelter looking concrete building out in the middle of nowhere and wanting to explore it and know the history behind it. Now there is a trailer park built behind it, lol. And apparently some clips of a skateboarding video called "Shorty's: how to go pro" was filmed there. While exploring I saw a lege next to a staircase that had red paint residue, mostly likely from a skater grinding on it.

If you are a native Zonie, this has always been one enigmatic structure, unavoidable as you take I-10 westbound to LA. If you have lived in the Valley for a very long time, you can't help wonder why for so many years this place was built and continues to stand with obviously nothing ever happening here for decades. My dad was a real estate attorney and actually one of those responsible for the building of this greyhound(?) racing facility. If you are familiar with Valley real estate in the 60s and 70s, real estate and organized crime had deep connections. My dad was probably the best in his field, so it was natural that his clientele included the mob and mob frontman. An example, Kemper Marley, one of those who was linked with the bombing death of reporter Don Bolles in '76. If I remember the story correctly (I was 16 at the time), he said it was built with mob money, but was quickly appropriated by the government before any racing ever took place.

God knows why this place still stands, especially with the explosion in growth of Buckeye surrounding it...

Actualy, it was a trotting park. In the 80's it was used as a venue for horse shows (show jumping). The property was deeded to Grand Canyon University where it was considered for a vet program (this never happened). In the 90's a developer bought the land and turned the stalls into storage unit and created a mobil home park on the south side. The idea was to build a golf course around the front and make the building a swap meet location. The producers had the pigeons captured and sent to Texas for trap and skeet shooting. They also paid to have all of the asbestos removed for the expolsion scene. Ironically, the Marine Corp used to practice night time training in the building.

And I care about pigeons because...?

Pigeons are filthy flying rats that thrive on urban decay. The more of them exterminated the better.
