plot point question--late in the movie

OK, so we are pretty far into this movie, Ed is in the conference room at the TV station with Rob Reiner and his staff.and the film crew is there also.
Ed wants to quit-he is told he cannot because of the fine print items in the contract he signed.
I was thinking at that point,Ed is live on TV,he knows how many people are watching, and this exec. just screwed him over, in front of everybody.
so
what if Ed looked into the camera and said,in effect
"all you viewers saw what happened here and I would like all the people that think this is not fair to right now change the channel or better yet turn off your TV sets for 24 hours-now, do it now".
.
The idea ,of course is to show the TV people that if that happened they would have a problem with the sponsors, etc. if the people turned off the show in protest of how ED is being treated.

Ed was just told that he couldn't act in a way that would be harmful to the show (he just menaced to stay in his bed all day), I guess this would be.
