Why is it underrated?

This is such a funny film on many levels from slapstick to brilliant satire, and it's packed with jokes. The riotous end sequence is the most hilarious. Eddie Murphy is about as good as he gets in two roles, the ultranerdy nobody (awesome!) and ego-charged movie star ("keep it together"). Why is it's rating so low?

reply

I agree. It is one of the few comedies that gets funnier as it progresses.

DirecTV. Because cable is for the mentally retarded and the elderly.

lol - loved this movie. I think despite its low IMDB rating it has a really big cult following

I didn't like it the first time I saw it, but gave it another chance. I liked it better the second time, and the third and so on. I think it gets funnier every time I see it.
Unlike me, most people probably just saw it once and probably didn't get alot of the jokes. So they just decided since they didn't understand it then it must be stupid. People can be very simple that way.

Bowfinger is definitely the most underrated comedy ever, IMHO.

Bowfinger is underrated, but not as underrated as e.g. Lower Learning (3.9 on imdb) and Danny Roane (4.5 on imdb) are. Both very funny movies -- if you get the humor, but I think people who get Bowfinger would.

reply

I just saw the movie and most of the jokes are the kind that are funny if you are big into movies.

All movies cost $2,110.(however much it was)

I watched it with friends that aren't really into movies and they couldn't tell why I was laughing when the undocumented workers were reading Cashiers du Cinema and discussing Citizen Kane.

GOOD MOVIE, I couldn't believe it had such a low rating on here.

I think it's mostly because during the summer that this movie came out, it was sadly overshadowed by Austin Powers II and Big Daddy. And that translates here, because no one gives it the time of day. Also, when I first went to see it, the title somehow made me not want to see it...Strange? It threw me off. I don't know, but for some reason, I think sometimes a title can either make or break a movie in terms of people wanting to see it without much thought into it. Very sad. To me, this is the diamond in the rough of that year. There isn't another comedy quite like Bowfinger that I can think of. WONDERFUL and BRILLIANT movie :)

Turn to stone, lose my faith, I'll be gone before it happens.

reply

I agree that it is very underrated! I hadn't even heard of it when it came out, and a friend of mine (a filmmaker) urged me to rent it. We own it now, and Eddie Murphy is GREAT! (As is Heather Graham and Steve Martin).

It should have received more attention than it got.

They should have named it Chubby Rain.

Two words. Chubby Rain.
Two more words. Mind Head.

Stop bashing things on the internet, you dumb bastards.

Ya this along with LA Story are tow movies that are unjustly underrated. Bowfinger is just so funny with hysterucal gag after another. Honestly I dont know why this movie isnt as reconized as it is. Its so much better than Big Daddy or Austin power 2

The problem is it seems that many movies about the behind the scenes movie making process never do very well. They may get good reviews, but do lousy at the box office. Or even if they do a healthy business at the box office, they go unappreciated afterwards.

When it comes to the movie making process, I imagine there are not many people among the movie going public that has any interest in how a movie is made. As a result, many of them are not interested in seeing a movie about a movie being made, regardless if the movie is fiction, non-fiction, biographical, documentary, etc. They always go unappreciated.

I thought it was a great funny movie, and that Murphy gave one of his best performances.

It's IMDb score is actually very high for a comedy. Comedies rarely get a 7 or more on IMDb, when they do they're normally comedy/dramas, animated comedies with more focus on plot than gags, or romantic comedies that are actually good (they get high votes from men for the comedy and high votes from the women for the romance).
Critically speaking, Bowfinger did very well. Check out it's Rotten Tomatoe's page, it's got an 80something score, which is VERY good.

Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. Hello? Hello?

Office Space and Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle are 2 comedies I instantly thought of that have ratings above 7

=)

reply

That is still a very rare occurance. Office Space is more like a comedy drama than a full-on comedy in many ways though, and I don't know about the US, but Harold & Kumar only attracted a very specific audience who were bound to like the movie when it came out here in the UK.

Actually, lots of recent comedies recieved high score at rottentomatoes.com. Just check titles like Dodgeball, Anchorman: The true story of Run Burgundy, Wedding Crashers and the 40 Year-Old Virgin. Those are 4 frat pack flics that have done exceptionally well at the box-office and got good RT scores as well. Other recent comedies that come in mind: Something's Gotta Give, School of Rock, and the list actually goes on and on.

"That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?"

reply

I think despite Dodgeball the other four movies were quite enjoyable. Okay, I liked Bowfinger a little bit more, because it has become some sort of all time classic to me, but I think Anchorman and the 40 Year-Old Virgin were funny as hell as well. I think they all deserve a good rating.

reply

I loved this film too.....i dont own it but i have got it out of the video hire about 5 times...hmm i really should buy it.

I think lots of people didnt really get the satire concept of it, which i cant understand as it is really brilliant!

reply

I don't know about the rest of the world, but it's probably underrated in Australia because of the terrible marketing. All the trailers I saw never even mentioned Kit Ramsey or said anything about what the movie was really about - they made people think the plot was "A bunch of idiots are going to try to make a movie, and Eddie Murphy is playing a nerdy guy". Who'd want to see that?

That wasn't just when the movie came out: I remember that Bowfinger has been shown on TV three times, and only ONCE did they adequately show what the movie was about and show the Kit Ramsey character.

reply

I can remember seeing previews / commercials for Bowfinger and thinking "that looks stupid" ... it wasn't until a few years later that my brother told me about how great it was, and man was he right!
On one hand I'd say that the marketing was poorly done. The movie looked like just another cheesy Eddie Murphy flick from the previews. But on the other hand, how do you explain a movie this complex in under 15 seconds?
It's unfortunate so many people chose not to see it just from its bad advertising campaign

"...I suppose this one's a goddamn ghost!"
