All or most of the crew are in some weird suspended animation??

shareTheir suspended animation is part of the gods' curse on Ulysses. His crew will only wake up when he finally makes his way back home. In the meanwhile they sleep.
There is indeed an episode in which they momentarily wake up, but I can't remember why. I'll have to watch again.

They were resurrected by a magician, who in return, wanted three men to hunt. Ulysses, Numenor (the brother of the little blue girl) and Telemechus volunteered. Long story short, the gods kill the magician and the crew return to their floaty-sleepy state. There was also another episode where they all got possessed and tried to take over the ship, too.
Also whilst it wasn't outwardly stated, it was hinted at that the crew might actually have been dead and would only be resurrected by the gods once they passed the kingdom of Hades. Yumi often made mention to possible ways to "bring her brother back to life," including using a hospital machine that was supposed to be able to cure any ill. Add to that, the crew also ended up being whisked away by the boatman to the city of Hades the moment the Odyssey showed up there.
It was probably a bit too dark for a kids show to say they were all dead outright, but I think that was the implication.
