trying to remember an old cartoon

OK, so I'm reaching into the depths of my mind way back to when I was a kid and remembered this cartoon I liked. If anyone can ID it then that would be cool.

Things I remember:

It had a early anime feel.

It had a large robot that was assembled from spererate parts, a bit like Voltron but not voltron(i checked and it wasn't the right design), as the good guy, people also piloted these sections.

The big robot thing had a yellow face-like midsection, which could form balls of energy for it to throw and in emergencies combine streams from the holes to form a superweapon of sorts. I think its fist also came off as a weapon and one of its battles was against some giant crab.

It had a droid girl who could cry and a white unicorn she rode on, she could command it to 'power up' and 'fire' at things and the unicorn fired some sort of weapon. The unicorn was called Pegasus I believe. I'm sure she (the girl) was also killed.

Oh and of course it had lots of skool metal-hitting-metal 'ching' and 'clang' sounds like they used to (and still do sometimes)
