I remember watching this series when i was much younger (we knew it as Ulysses 2000 in the philippines) and i really loved it.
I dont know wether to classify this as anime-style cartoon. or an anime outright. It's awesome regardless, but im picky about these things...anyway....Does anyone know if any region 2 japanese DVDs exist? Or if theres a japanese track in the french DVDs??
This literally is a mix of both. The series was produced by Jean Chalopin who is a very well known creator of cartoons (he also worked on Cities of Gold and Inspector gadget). Just like a lot of cartoons in the 80's, it was animated in Japan because that was the cheapest at the time. Unlike most cartoons animated in Japan for foreign countries, this was actually a co-production. The character designs were by Japanese people (according to wikipedia, one of them was responsible for Saint Seiya). I'll admit right away that I'm an anime-fan, and even I'd classify it as 'anime', though it's also a French cartoon. It DOES have a Japanese version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHK1NyLJpVI Space Legend Ulysses) though I hear it didn't quite catch on in Japan. I think Cities of Gold did though, which has about the same background as Ulysses 31. Regardless of it being both French or Japanese, it's a great cartoon..I hate to say this, but they don't make 'em like they used to anymore..*L*
-EDIT-
After taking another look at the wikipedia entry, I'm even more certain I'd classify this as anime, apparently the Pilot episode was only released in Japanese. After that one, the full series was commisioned for the full Japanese and French version. Apparently they did some major redesigns after the pilot, as is usual. Wonder if that's available on-line somewhere..
Its one of hundreds of collaberations from that era and even now. Its a mix of styles that in a way is its own at times. The degree varies from series to series.
