Seriously inappropriate music, lmao...

Let me start by saying I loved this show when I was a kid. But even then I thought a lot of the music just seemed kind of out of place in a kids cartoon.

Just when Bert raccoon is cleaning up his room, or setting up a lemonade stand, some 80's rock song will start blasting with lyrics that have NOTHING to do with what's going on, "OH BABYYYY, COME WITH MEEE YEAAAH, HEY HEY, WE CAN BEEEE TOGETTTHERRRRRRR"... it just... always... seemed so weird and inappropriate.

My american husband who has never seen this show was in the room with me the other day when an old re-run of the show came on. I was like "You gotta see this. It's a cartoon about some raccoons that run a newspaper publishing company and it plays seriously ill-suited rock ballads that have nothing to do with the storyline."

I'm watching it right now on Teletoon Retro (the one where Burt is trying to climb Evergreen Mountain), and yeah, the 80's soundtrack may be out of place, but as a kid when the show first aired in the 80's and as an adult now, I never thought that the music detracted from the story at all.

The last one I watched just the other day had Cyril Sneer operating a potato chip factory, and the song that was playing while they were making the potato chips was this 80's power ballad that went: "DESPERATE IN THE NIIIIIIIIGHT, DESPERATE IN THE NIIIIIIIIIGHT".... seriously wtf!?

reply

ahahahah I saw that episode not very long ago. And I understand what you mean about the inappropriate music lol. The last episode I watched, they were in a bike race and the music was like a power ballad metal love song.

"Lions and Tigers" is another good example. Fantastic song, but totally apropos of nothing. "There you go now / You walked out that door / Like nothing's gonna bring you back no more! / And I'm wanderin' in circles so small / Hopin' to heaven you'll call..."

lol i wish they still made cartoons like this ! you cant beat classic cartoons from the 80's/early 90's when i was growing up !. I've seen a lot of cartoons from different decades, and i have to say they were the best !. I'm not just being biased because it was during the time i grew up.

hey now....this show lauched Lisa Lougheed's music career....who knows where she'd be today if it wasnt for this. lol

The songs were great, but yeah, if you listen to the words they were weird. But it can't be worse than Scooby-Doo having chase scenes to '70s pop love ballads...including one about a freaking OSTRICH.
