How did this series get 500 episodes? lol

I actually enjoy watching this show in my spare time and I'm up to episode 50 or so and it's not that it's a bad show. It's that almost every episode is a rehash of an older episode. This has been hammered into the show a lot and I'm only a small part into the series. It's a good show but 90% of the episodes are the same, the characters act/look the same, the plot doesn't really go anywhere, etc. Japanese people must really not care about proper story structure if this has lasted over 500 episodes. I enjoy this show and I'll watch up to 130 but it's definitely flawed and I wouldn't want to watch the repetitive formula that much. Grow up already!

Not a huge fan of this either, but I'm sure many people ask the same about the Simpsons, Family Guy, Sponge Bob and Scooby Doo. Most of that *beep* should be dead by now too. Especially the latter.

I do like the show a lot but they just repeat themselves. It gets tiresome once youve seen about 50 and every episode is the same storyline as another episode.

I got to around 230, and then quit, I might return when an ending is announced, I'm still interested in the movies though. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great series, but I don't have the time to catch up, at least not at this partiular moment.

"Japanese people must really not care about proper story structure if this has lasted over 500 episodes."

Funny, that. And I thought it was the good ol' West that introduced such things as House, X-files as well as the CSI's and Law&Orders of this world. Please think before you patronize a nation of people/culture just because the creators of a show decided to follow a long-established creative formula. If said formula is not your cup of tea, then that's alright, heck, it's not mine either, but there's no need to make statements that make you end up looking like any of the other ignorant douchebags who plague the internet.

oh I've thought about it plenty. This show entirely rehashes stories they have already used. Not even sort of rehashes it, it draws direct influence in every sequence of events more often than not. Once you've seen 50 eps, you've seen them all. And I don't care about those other lame repetitive shows, that's not an excuse. I don't watch those either, most people just watch those because it becomes routine and they don't analyze plot structure like I do to notice they are just reusing old storylines.

It's not only Japanese who don't care about the plot of each episode.
It's more of Chinese.

I admit that the anime itself is not perfect because of the pattern of the plot.I myself haven't watched all eps on TV either. Many of those eps aren't created by the manga author himself.
But I'm a crazy fan of the original manga, and I can tell you that the storyline is amazingly impressive. And its influence is much more widely than you can imagine.
If you ever understand Chinese you will easily find there are millions of Chinese fans(And I bet that the exact number is more than the population of any European country) discussing about EVERYTHING of the anime EVERY DAY.Among ALL ages.
How come that there is always someone discovering new things from it every day while you are tired of just "analyzing plot structure"?
I don't blame you because you are certainly not into the whole story. And I strongly recommend you not to watch most of those series longer than 20 eps.

Maybe buying lottery or even playing Russian Roulette suits you better, considering that you are grown up already and don't want repetitive stuff any more.

I honestly don't get where you're coming from...

If you're coming from overarching plot, yeah I can kind of see it, the anime cut out some of the mangas early plot in favor of doing weekly mysteries, the overarching plot really doesn't go anywhere until around episode 129 when Ai makes her first appearance... It really gets good from there (unfortunately if you don't watch the fansubs, you don't get any of that) and even then, we get maybe one or two really good nuggets of plot in any given season...

as for the meat of the show itself, the weekly murder mystery, there are basically 3-4 ways you can actually kill someone, it's all in the method, and some of the methods are absolutely brilliant.

The mystery genre isn't about storytelling, it's about collecting clues, interviewing witnesses, and solving crimes... this is no more repetitive than the novels by Dame Agatha Christie, and she's tied with Shakesphere as the BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF ALL TIME

This show takes some of the most familiar types of mysteries, and switches them up, I mean they do the "And then there were none" style of mystery FOUR times over the course of the first 50 episodes, and yet all are different, and brilliant in their own way, heck I've watched all four 2 parters, and I'm still on the edge of my seat through them =D...

Agreed. Detective Conan is not a bad anime and some cases are enjoyable, but it's one of the least realistic and most formulaic ones - especially considering it's not a typical action shounen, but supposedly a police/crime. It is really awfully recycled, and unbelievably long.

🐺 Boycott movies that involve real animal violence (& their directors) 🐾
