Why the R rating???

This is rated R for violence and language but the violence here is not enough for an R rating. The most violent scene here is probably the scene where Manni got hit by an ambulance and that's even unrealistically mild (his body should have a trajectory ) and there's barely any crude language here.

Why are MPAA so strict on independent and foreign films?

They could have made it with a PG-13 if they cut two F-words.

They could have left the words in German (if f--- is different in German) and just changed the subtitles to say 'damn'. The MPAA probably wouldn't have known.

Love's turned to lust and blood's turned to dust in my heart.

Because Americans are puritanical? (It's rated '15' here in the UK).

If she had have taken her gear off it probably would have been banned in the USA.

The UK rating is actually stricter; Americans under 17 can see an R-rated movie if they're with an adult.

USA are more harsh on movies. Look at the ratings for various countries:

Argentina:13, Brazil:12, Canada:PG, Germany:16, Sweden:11, Switzerland:12.
