Dinosaur Vs. Land Before Time

Which is better? Why?

reply

I liked 'Dinosaur' better, mainly because of the pacing. The Land Before Time was very rushed, in my opinion.

I agree that the pacing in The Land Before Time was slightly weird, but it still was a much better film - much, much better. It had a better story and music - fair enough not visual effects. But i suppose I'm biased anyway as i have always loved The Land Before Time.

reply

I absolutely love LAND BEFORE TIME because it has always will be my favorite dinosaur movie. it has cool action when mother and the "sharp tooth" fight it was so cool!!!!! it was also more funnier and exciting! and dat wat do u mean rushed??!!!??? i think it was jus fine the way it is!

reply

Land Before Time was crap.

reply

The Land before Time originally was supposed to ben enarly 15 or 20 minutes longer than it was because there were some animation deemed too intense for children this why The Land Before time seems so short

I just saw Dinosaur and The Land Before Time (our family's going through a dinosaur phase at the moment), and I much preferred Dinosaur.

Dinosaur's visuals, characters and storyline are far superior in my opinion. Some people on this board have criticised its "let's all work together" theme, but I didn't have a problem with it. Also, the movie's pacing is much better.

As for The Land Before Time, I was surprised at how dated it looks (I didn't realise it was so old). Also, the characters in TLBT are just average at best (I couldn't stand Cera), plus the storyline is less realistic (why would a hungry T-Rex waste its precious time chasing a bunch of baby dinos that wouldn't even amount to a full meal?).

TLBT is good if you're into cutesy old Disney style cartoons, which, admittedly, I'm not a big fan of. Dinosaur, on the other hand, is your best bet if you like CGI cartoons with a good combination of realism, action and comraderie.

I love Dinosaur and The Land Before Time and these 2 are very powerful movies with messages about friendship, love, courage and hope and Belive-in-your-self kind of thing. Anyone who hates these two films are complete losers. The Land Before Time and Dinosaur made me cry I'll never forget these two films so stop it with the whole "Dinosaur Vs. Land Before Time" crap ok.

reply

Yeah, I though they were both great movies. However, if you wanna get into the sequals to Land Before Time, the don't do the original ANY justice. There wasn't one cheesy sing along in the original, but after the second one came out... well, you see what that triggered. We'll be dead and burried before they stop making new Land Before Time movies.

reply

I liked the sequels to the land before time but none of them will ever surpass the Original masterpiece. Never!

reply

Yeah, some of them are alright. Though, I haven't seen any of them past, I think, 5, so I wouldn't know about those.

reply

Original Land Before Time is way better than Dinosaur.
The Land Before Time is dark, touching and funny. I couldn't get into Dinosaur. It seemed that someone died every twelve seconds.

reply

you suck ass wildanimals, Dinosaur and The Land Before Time are the best family films ever. And Dinosaur is as good as The Land Before Time.

reply

The original "Land before time" was much more better than this Disney's rip-off because:

1) It has better story, better character development, and better atmosphere overall.

2) It was traditionally animated, which i prefer over CG.

reply

Both have good music to it, James Horner's score for The Land Before Time is better.

Says who? You? How old are you? Two years old?

reply

I like Dinosaur over LBT because of the animation and anatomical accuracy of the majority of the dinosaurs. LBT looked, as with most dinosaurs in traditionally-animated cartoons, like someone just drew a dinosaur off of the top of their head, which has always bothered me. I'm a paleo-nerd, so accurate portrayal of dinosaurs in the media is very important to me. It was nice to see Dinosaur's dinosaurs moving around and acting like dinosaurs; hands in the right position, their jaws not shifting from side to side like they're unable to do in real life, all of that helped make them look a lot more real to me. They actually had a few paleo-artists on the design team of Dinosaur, and let me tell you, having David Krentz as their dinosaur consultant was their saving grace. I was actually happy to learn that another of my favorite paleo-artists, Mark Hallett, served as a concept artist at one time.

However, I think Dinosaur's script was one of its setbacks. Perhaps it was too preachy at times, perhaps not enough preach in others. I can never put my finger on it, but I did groan a few times at Zini's jokes and the over-use of monkey puns. I swear, one more "monkey's uncle" joke and I would have chucked my TV out of the window. I don't remember how good or bad LBT's writing was, so I can't compare, but it was really bad.

LBT is more original, but I prefer Dinosaur, because of the Carnotaurs.

reply

I like LBT, because the dinosaurs look much more classic. I love the look of the pre-90s dinosaurs. I also love the art style of LBT, because its much gloomier, in a similar fashion to the Rite of Spring sequence in Fantasia. The dinos in LBT also move much better, they have a very graceful flow as they walk, run, or talk.

Land Before Time - Better story, well defined characters that have stood the test of two decades. Old Fashioned animation done right!

Dinosaur - Visually more realistic thanks to computer annimation/FX etc
In my opinion copied many key details from Land Before Time:
1.) Main character hatched at beginning of film
2.) Prehatched egg in danger before the hatching, including falling into a river/waterfall
3.) Survives a natural disaster early in film earthshake/meteor crash
4.) Assembled herd of various species of Dinosaurs travel together to a green, lush place "The Great Valley" or "The Nesting Grounds"

Dinosaur "borrowed" these scenes from LBT and copied it's basic story arc, daring to go a little more intense where Land Before Time was reigned in as to not make it as graphic or scary for little kids. Disney opted to go for the PG version of the same basic concept.

Personally I prefer "The Land Before Time". It endures as the better overall film and can be enjoyed multiple times. Characters were well developed. An original!

Dinosaur -visually more realistic looking thanks to newer technology, but ultimately borrowed too much of it's plot from the other film.
Doesn't stand up as well to repeated viewings.

I've loved LBT since I first saw it 20 years ago. I was a kid on a dinosaur kick (from which I've never fully recovered) and just had to go and see it. I fell in love with the movie instantly and dragged my poor mother back to the theater multiple times.

I just wish that cut footage could be restored! I'd love to see the violent, bloody parts of the Sharptooth/Earthshake sequence.

One update from my previous comment:
For those who enjoyed the documentaries like "Walking with Dinosaurs" and "Dinosaur Planet" or even "Dinosaurs 3D IMAX", you will probably enjoy "Dinosaur" more than LBT.

Now that my child is into those realistic documentaries that essencially use the same computer annimation FX used in Dinosaur and the JP films, he prefers to see "Dinosaur" again instead of the LBT films which he previously loved but now seem too cartoony for him. He prefers the real looking ones now!

Although aging, the annimation of "Dinosaur" holds up well when compared to these more recent documentary films.

As far as actual story arc, I still believe the original Land Before Time film had a better written story which created interesting, defined characters using minimal dialogue. It remains a great example of good old fashioned hand drawn annimation.

"Dinosaur" did borrow many key plot elements from LBT, and in my opinion got a little side tracked with the whole "Lemur family/love monkey silliness".

But if you want a good film that features realistic looking dinosaurs, Disney's Dinosaur remains the one the best choices out there.

What can I say, I like both films.

land before time because they actually wrote a script that was original. Dinosaur just stole the same script.

I prefer Land Before Time, which is a beautiful poignant film and one of the better Don Bluth movies. Dinosaur was still a very good movie, but I remember being really disturbed by the Carnotaurs.
