Black Angel coming to DVD or Blu Ray??

Is there a Chance that we see the movie on DVD or Blu Ray??

reply

I don't think so. Roger found the original negatives at the end of last year (2012), and is thinking of the best way to circulate the movie. When I last heard he was thinking of some form of download options. Can't wait. Just hope it's as good as I remember it being.

I saw restoration premiere last night at the Mill Valley Film Festival. An extraordinary work with a definite elegiac vibe running throughout.

Roger Christian was present and reports that Trevor Jones will be sending the original music tracks to Skywalker Sound for re-mastering - so the restoration effort is not quite completed yet. Christian said the film will be available in some format, probably in 2014, but he did not specify DVD, BluRay or digital delivery.

The print was taken from the original negative found at Universal last year. It was remarkably clean with fine color balance, but there was some digital noise in the bright sky images and understandable murkiness in the blacks - I'm going to guess the limitations of the projection equipment at the venue may account for some of the flaws. Christian mentioned that the DP, Roger Pratt, threw away the light meter early on and eyeballed the light levels through much of the shoot, which is amazing in itself.

Also mentioned were upcoming festival screenings in Scotland, so keep an eye out.

I was also there at MVFF on Sunday, 33 years after I saw it aged 5 (only once, as my first cinematic experience) prior to 'ESB' - and 32 years since I was last in the Bay Area. It was extraordinary to revisit something after so long, confirming a few deeply-engrained memories and clearly revealing why other directors found this so influential at the time. It would appear that Roger Christian and I were the only people present at Throckmorton Theatre that night who had seen the film screen back in 1980 :) - he, I think, at the Odeon Leicester Square premiere on May 20th 1980 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/7854659@N05/5370941763/ - and I at the North Star cinema in Lerwick, Shetland a few months later - http://www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/scotland/lerwick/index.html

Since Sunday, there have been various developments and quite a bit of press re: the MVFF screening and subsequent options for the film. Talks are ongoing about how it will be delivered in 2014, and Skywalker Sound are confirmed for basic sound restoration. Access to original audio masters is restricted to the combined final stereo mix, as far as I'm aware - and re-recording foley, dialogue, design elements etc over remastered OST is highly unlikely, and probably both unnecessary and potentially detrimental to the film.

We are hoping to bring this film to Scotland in 2014, before anywhere else in Europe - which seems appropriate given that it was shot here; I'll post up any further information as and when it is confirmed.

During the discussion following the special screening at Edinburgh's Filmhouse last night, Roger Christian indicated that Black Angel might be included in a new Star Wars DVD package and might also be made available through iTunes.

It'll be on the Web in no time.
