Thank God this is finally coming out on DVD... Now maybe all the obsessed fans can sit quietly at home at watch it and finally realize that it's not nearly as funny as they remember and can stop carrying on at how great and "groundbreaking" it was...

It was an ok sketch show, nothing more. Even at it's worst, SNL has always been more consistently funny. The individual members of The State have gone on to much better things, and I would actually like to see them reunite with new material, as I'm sure it would be much better now that they have grown.

But the show was never as good as everyone who's a fan makes it out to be....

This show is horrible. I love bizarre sketch comedy, improv, even a lot of the comedians involved. Their movies are great, reno 911, etc, so I don't understand why this is so bad. Upright Citizens Brigade is sort of cut from the same mold but is way, way funnier. Once again, these skits are not funny at all, it looks like the "comedy show" my high school ran, and nobody watched then.

reply

Well thanks everybody I guess now we know that were not supposed to like this show because it's too popular. Im so glad knowing that every time I laughed at this show I was completely wrong... I guess I'll just go watch some robot chicken

reply

Or go watch "Kids in the Hall" so you can see excellent sketch comedy.

reply

Mr Show is the best sketch show ever so just quit it also im crushing your head. (The state is still better than the kids in the hall movie)

reply

Well yeah the kids in the hall movie wasn't very good. Mr. Show was good, but it also had alot of bad sketches along with the good.

KITH had like 3 non funny sketches in 5 years.

Maybe it helps to be old enough to remember the early 90s (or more specifically early 90s MTV) to appreciate it more? Though having to remove the original music (featured lots of early 90s songs) on the DVDs kinda ruined that a lil bit

to Flying Monkey, the show wasn't meant for retards. Maybe do some brain games and try and gain some IQ points then you might appreciate it. Also, Mr. Show is not as good as the State, although it had some really good sketches. Kids In The Hall is pretty much terrible, and SNL is even worse, the fact that anyone could say that today's SNL is better than the State is mind boggling.

reply

Fact: Mr Show is far better than The State this is not an opinion.

reply

Mr. Show is overrated, some of the sketches are great and many are terrible, the State captured the era perfectly and was a better show. Mr. Show wasn't a terrible show at all but it is very overrated, kind of the Bruce Springsteen of sketch comedy

reply

Would be true if Mr. Show didn't rip off the state.

reply

I watched the first few epsiodes when it came out on DVD and I said to myself what was I thinking??? It didnt hold up well at all and was pretty unfunny.

reply

I agree with the OP. This show has its moments, but on the whole is just not funny. It's almost embarrassingly bad at times. I do like their solo work, just not this show. It's like The Emperor's New Clothes or something. Like I know I'm supposed to find it funny, and everyone else acts like they are finding it funny, but they're probably afraid of what their comedy snob friends will say if they don't. But I should say I didn't watch it when it was first on, so there is no nostalgia factor for me.

Btw I really can't believe this entire thread. I do wonder how you all treat people in real life.

This thread is hilarious. I love how for some reason people have declared The State something that an intelligent unconventional person would laugh at. If you showed the Louie sketches to a room of retarded 12 year olds guess how much they would be cracking up? In fact, that's probably how they got their laugh track...

Seriously, you guys need to get over yourself. This isn't "intelligent" comedy. If you like it, fine. If you laugh at the sketches, fine. But don't act like it was groundbreaking or for people with high IQs. It's not.

The best Louie sketch was the Jesus one, and remember, the point of Louie was to make fun of catchphrases, IIRC.

Sometimes I could kiss your mind, Roy.

I agree; overrated. Most of the sketches (out of 27 whole episodes) were dumb, but a few were gems. But not enough, like the ratio of 'Mr. Show' or something. HOWEVER...nearly all of the original cast members went on to much funnier things. The State show wasn't that awesome but the players have talent and produced funny stuff. MIB and his books, Reno911! (I'm a big fan), etc.

Overrated?

I've yet to run into someone over the last 10 years that grew up in the 90s that even remembers "The State".

To me... I loved the show when I was growing up, but, it was always very hit or miss. The misses were painfully unfunny, but, the raw talent was always there and the fact that most of the cast members went on to bigger and better things shows that.

I think it's properly rated. People who loved it remember it, the vast majority of society has long forgotten about it. I don't know how that qualifies as overrated at all.
